To make a long story shorter, I think the bearings closest to the throttle body in the S/C went bad. I was seeing 14* KR at regular cruise. It pretty much went away if I really got on it. Plus the S/C sounded like a rock tumbler. It sounded like the issue was in the snout end, so I removed the belt to buy me some time, and my KR went back to normal. I got maybe 2* at part throttle accel in hills. But the snout seemed very stable, I couldn't notice any play between the pulley to the inner coupler. I put everything back together and the sound seems to come more from the other end of the S/C. I've seen write ups on replacing those bearings, but I don't want to mess with it. I'm sure I'll make something worse. Is there any shop or anyone near Davenport, IA/Moline, IL that could help a brother out? I'm getting tired of driving it without the S/C. Thanks.

First off, MST3K FTW.

Anyway, I don't know that there's bearings back there, but I do know that there are gears. If you can get the whole S/C off, you should be able to remove the rotor assembly from the case and then be able to determine what it is. Hope that helped somewhat. Also, try the GM service manual in the upper right hand corner of the page.

there are needle bearings in the case on the ends of the rotors closest to the throttle body. but i dont see how those how those could produce that excessive knock. maybe the coating has worn off your rotors.

Sounds more like a coupler issue. Remove the snout and replace coupler. It's very simple and takes maybe 30 minutes. Most shops will want to replace the entire S/C.
