what are the labor hours for Rockers, Headers,. I've been quoted $300 install cost apiece, or $500 at the same time. Seems excessive to me. What do you guys think?

Thank you

You're in central Ohio? There's some guys around here that will do it for beer and pizza haha. What kind of rockers are you talking about? Modified stock?

-- Wed Feb 16, 2011 1:54 pm --

And what kind of headers?

For a shop, that sounds about right. But, yeah, I'd do it for a Prime Rib dinner, just about.

Grow some balls and do it yourself :). What's the point in modifying if you don't take pride in your work? Save the money you would have spent on labor to more mods :P

Big x2. Half the fun of modding is learning how to do things.

Bad idea on the rockers. Get Yella Terra 1.84 roller rockers with their pushrods. To do the 1.9's, you'll need to rework the heads with new valve seals, and springs. If you're not doing those, don't do the 1.9's. The difference in the lift ratio is minimal, and you'll only drop 1-2HP with it, and the roller rockers offer less friction, and will make the valvetrain more rev friendly.

If he did modded 1.9's he'd be fine, and pushrods wouldn't be necessary.

Also, SpeedDaddy headers on ebay are an exact copy of SLP headers, except they are made of 321 Stainless steel instead of mild steel. I would highly, highly recommend them.

Why do you need new springs and seals with the 1.9s? J/W im in the process of shopping for some and I've read conflicting info all over the place. What I hear is modded 1.9s are okay with stock components with rpms under 6k.

But, getting the revs up will take advantage of the greater lift and breating ability. Plus, the stock rockers are friction tip, and the rollers are much better. The engine becomes a little more rev happy with roller rockers. I would never use or recommend the modded rockers, personally. The lighter rockers are a big benefit as well. When you really weigh the pros and cons, modded rockers aren't worth it.

My 1.9:1 roller rockers were actually a bit heavier than the stock stamped steel rockers. I would recommend rollers over modded stock if money isn't an issue at all, but modded stockers really do work fine. with roller rockers you need to change springs and the install gets a lot harder.

Basically what I'm getting at though is there's a lot of people in the GP community in Ohio and I'm sure some guys would be willing to help you out OP. Most of us on here are from NE Ohio although there are a few others. Check out www.goclubgp.com and see if there's any members local to you.

Roller rockers don't require springs or seals. Roller 1.9's do, but I used the Yella Terra 1.84 rockers, and they were substantially lighter, and before the tune, they woke the engine up from 4800-6200rpm. After the tune, the whole rev range to 6500 was nice.

You revved to 6500 with roller rockers on stock springs? You've got balls Joe, haha. Generally springs are recommended with any rocker install but most guys can get away with stock springs on modded stock rockers.

I went further than that thanks to a typo in the tuner. But, yeah, first and second gear were commanded to run out to 6400 for the shift point...and it went there on a regular basis. Best I ever saw was 6700.

2hrs to do the rockers and the rear header is easier when the rear VC is off. So i would guess in a 4-5hrs you would have rockers and headers on. the only reason i know this is i have done it. :)

I checked at the Stealership when I did my rockers and springs. They wanted $1200 in labor. They said they take the heads off the engine and do it that way. I told them exactly where to go. Did mine myself and haven't had any issues that was like 40 000km ago. It was alot of fun.

Nope,

rockers take about 45mins to an hr w/o doing springs. Now you got 3-4 hrs to do the header install. done and complete.

What's shop labor cost per hour. 90 bucksish? (that's what it is around here). Plus shop fees and blah blah blah so 3 x 90 + shop fee = 300 bucks. Sounds about right to me. Exactly why learning how to do things yourself or finding others who do know how to do it is the way to go. Why shell out roughly 100 bucks per hour for a shop to do it when you can do it for free and learn something in the process?

I think it more or less boils down to time. Some people don't have the time to install things. So they pay a shop to do the work. Nothing wrong with it and its not like you get bous points at shows or the race track.
