Good day!

I installed a K&N CAI yesterday (cleaned MAF and Throttle Body too) and today was the first time I could go out and really test out the potential benefits.

First off, I can definately tell a positive difference in hp, but certainly not 16hp as K&N claims.....but hey..this is just me gauging this so who knows. I definately hear the SC more now! When I am in WOT, the whine is definately telling me it is working hard and it does get loud inside.

Wonder what is sounds like outside? :)

Questions.....
I hear a slight puff puff puff...and so on. as I accelerate before the SC kicks in. I can hold that point when driving and it is nothing obtrusive, just different. I think that this is normal, but wanted to check.

Also, when in WOT, I am get close to 6500 rpms and could go fiurther but pull back before it hits 7000 rpms. I really have not paid too much attention to the RPMs before when stomping the gas so I do not have a baseline. How far can I push it??

Also, I hate the way I get that lag in between the auto shifts.

Also....all of this is making me want to get tuned PCM, headers/downpiple, cat back sooner rather than later.

Ayyhaaa !! :)

Thanks in advance....

there is no delayed reaction for a S/C like there is for a turbo to spool up

The puff puff puff is normal, its just air moving through.

Its an auto, it will shift when it needs to.

The lag again is part of an automatic (Yes again I am saying that an automatic supercharged vehicle lags, most people will disagree with this statement). A tune will greatly reduce this.

Thank you.

Well....what about the getting close to 7000rpm on WOT? good? bad? normal? :)

And now the big question is do I get a PCM from 3800? or ZZP? or....
How much would a typical custome tune cost me?

I think the obvious choice would be to do the headers/DP/cat and then do a tune.

Thanks

It should be fine to go close to 7k since that's what is programmed from the factory for, but I guess I don't pay that much attenton to my RPMS when I'm at WOT though...

PCM... A lot of people have varied opinions on those. Best answer in my opinion is buy a tuner so you can adjust the car with every mod you do, thats a pricey option that takes some experiance though. Next option for the best tune would be take it to a local shop and let them do some work, this route will probably put you back around $250 for a couple dyno pulls and a tune, but professionals who back their work would be doing it. The third and least expensive option is a "box" tune. For a basic tune like this you can buy from anywhere, they're all pretty much going to be the same. The best part about the last option is if you want to keep your stock pcm you can always pick up a cheap one to use as your core.

I would do the exhaust work before a tune if you are going to have someone professionally tune for you, if not it won't make a huge differance on a box tune or your own tuning.

Hey there,

This may be a dumb question so if it is, please go easy. I reported yesterday that I heard this
" puff..puff..puff....etc..." sound since adding the CAI and I was told above that this is normal.

My question is why do not I hear this sound when in park and revving the engine? The sound is actually like a "pa pa pa pa...." and occurs only when I press the accelerator down right before I hear the SC whine really become apparant. It just sounds strange to me, like an exhaust pipe is in my engine compartment and then it goes away once I start hearing the whine of the SC and go to WOT.

Any thoughts? or should I just suck it up to so speak? :)

6500 - 7000 shifting?

That isn't right, isn't your redline at 6K?

Its at a cruise when you aren't flooring it and its not sitting still right? My GT does that too, its just regulating the air. When you're in park its breathing less, but you should still hear a slight puffing, and when you rev it up or go WOT it is pulling the air straight through making more of a sucking sound. In between the two at a "cruise" or under a medium load it is pulling in air at a less frequent rate so its trying to constantly adjust.

Or your Vtec's broke...

What gear are you in when you are hitting 6k+? And its in D not manually in a gear when this happens right?

Hi there,
I think your first paragraph is accurate. I am moving at a constant speed and then press the accelerator and it is in that in between stage (cruise and WOT) that I hear the puffing. This occurs while in DRIVE. I do not use the tap shift at all....never really did~! I am not sure what gear I am in when I hit 6K and will double check that tomorrow.

From what you are saying all is normal. When I installed the CAI, I knew the SC whine would be louder, but was not expecting the puffing. To be honest, that puffing sound make the car sound like it is having problems. I will have just have to accelerate through the puffing more often.

Hello,

Just an update. I have to say that if this "puffing" sound is normal, it is driving me nuts. Actually, at certain times, it sounds like a diesel engine or a bad exhaust coming rom the filter area, but this only happens in the "in between" stage when.....lets say I slowly accel that and my foot just has a little pressure on the pedal and I press a little further it goes away. However, I can hold the point in acceleration and it really sounds like a diesel. This noise is probably normal, but I wish I there was a way to smooth out this sound. It does not occur when the vehicle is static and I press the accelerator the same way.

This situation did not occur prior to me installing the CAI, so either I did not install something right, (fyi..the MAF arrow is pointing towards the TB so that is ok), or something failed at the same time (very unlikely), or this is just the way it is.

Am I missing anything obvious here?

Update:

I think I solved the problem! I went out this morning and took apart the CAI and then reassembled and retightened all the clamps. I went for a quick test drive and no more extreme puffing! I obviously had a leak somewhere and I made sure I tightened all the clamps down very securely.

I will be able to do more extensive test run on the way to golf, but for now this is a huge relief.

Thanks for all the input on this.
