Hello. I was looking for a down-pipe for my 04+ Grand Prix, but then i got to thinking how hard it would be to actually throw one together and just weld it on... Has anybody done this before, or is it something i should just not try myself and buy one from ZZP or somewhere? I would be going for a catless 3" without the 02 sensor, so would just some three inch tubing bent to spec be pretty much all i need? I would likely just order one but i think i could save a good dollar because with shipping the pipe would be over $200... Also, is it worth hackin out that resonator and replacing it with a straight pipe? I don't know a heck of a lot about exhaust but it sounds like it would be a fun project if i had a little guidance on what i would need... Any suggestions? Thanks.

i made a downpipe out of my old pipe for sneaky purposes looks like the cat is still there. shhhhhh but its hollow all looks stock welded a piece of pipe inside to eliminate any puppling of fuel etc. so it wont pop in the exhaust and bolted it all back up with stock exhaust gaskets no leaks to worry bout or flanges to match

Thats a pretty neat idea too, i guess i could have gone that route too. I decided to just get headers that included a downpipe, and i am pretty happy i went that route except for my leaky crossover :( The fitment of the crossover was not good at all, even with the flanges grinded down. Im wondering if its something to do with the 04+ grand prix transmissions being taller than the older ones, or maybe just the comp g transmission :s.... Oh well its not too bad at least i got the y pipe all sealed up.

This sort of Bender is not recommended:

The trans on all the 98/97GTP-08 cars are all the same (minus HD diffs and gearing but the cases are all the same). So don't fell left out. There are other guys who have had header clearance issues. What brand of headers did you get?

I got the pacesetter headers... I like them and all minus the fitment issues/ ypipe deal, but just that crossover is leaky from off the front header.

Hey, the issues on the headers would be that the flanges from the front header to the crossover are too big and rub on the transmission, so when you try to put them together it makes them try to seal together at an angle leaving a little gap underneath the crossover. To fix this i tried to grind down the bottom of the flanges, but i guess i didn't quite grind enough away. I did copper RTV the crossover very good, but there must be a bit of a space still underneath it. Also, the bolts for the crossover are far too short, so all you need is some grade 8 bolts that are about 1.5 inches longer than the ones it comes with, maybe 2. For the Y-pipe i would recommend getting 2.5 inch stepped band clamps so they dont leak, and put large amounts of copper RTV on them. :P I got my clamps for 13 bucks each for stainless steel ones and they work amazingly. The only other things i can think of is that the oxygen sensors need to be extended, and it will throw a P1068 code i think which is oxygen sensor. It only comes on once or twice a week so i just clear the code with my scanner. When you put the car in reverse it makes a clunk, which is probably the oxygen sensor hitting the car when the engine shakes. Another little thing is that the front header kind of touches the metal fan cover on the passenger side, and the middle rear spark plug wire boot sits on the header if not tied up properly. This only will happen if you shift abruptly into reverse though. Other than that though there pretty aweesome. I like the way they sound without the cat, and they look amazing under the hood. They were fairly tough to install, so plan yourself 2 days or so expecially to let the copper rtv set up and dry properly. Also be careful when working under the hood because i broke 3 or 4 things accidentaly, one being a 50 dollar sensor.

Edit: I forgot to mention all the gaskets are complete crap and made of soggy paper so dont forget to either reuse your stock exhaust manifold gaskets, and get a better downpipe gasket.

Right now i am going into stock exhaust, but am certainly considering the ZZP aluminized catback kit with either the magnaflows or Flopro's and no resonator. It doesn't sound bad at all with stock, but i think it would sound pretty deadly with magnaflows for sure. :P

I did it, used the stock flange, bored out the middle bought a 3" u bend and 3" flex pipe and made a reducer to 2.5 for the catback. spend under 80 for everything IIRC, flex pipe being the most expensive part.

Cool! Yeah using the flanges from the stock is a great idea. I bet the flex pipe you used is probably even better than the ones most downpipes come with.
