I bought an L32 from a local parts reseller. It didn't come with a flywheel, and I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out a way to get the bolt off of the harmonic balancer so I can get a puller on it to get the pulley off. Anybody have any suggestions?

IIRC you have to use a special puller on it.

I'm not even to the part where I get to pull the pulley off yet. I have to stop the part that holds the flywheel from spinning in order to be able to get the bolt out.

Here's a pic of where my problem is:

A local guy suggested bolting a flat metal rod to the bolts in there and using that to keep it from spinning which should work

You're going to have to figure out how to keep the crank from spinning, then either hit it with an impact gun and hope for the best, or use a 5 ft cheater bar to break it loose

This guy had the same idea, and designed a tool to tackle the problem: Crank Sensor - some other tactics

You need to use an impact gun. A break over bar...that's like pushing rope if its never been removed before. Your trying to remove 111 ft. lbs. + like 76* its a chore.

It will turn a little, but the impact gun WILL win and the bolt will unscrew. It just takes some hammering time, pausing to let the compressor catch up, and refill with air/pressure.

I have never needed to hold the flywheel using an impact gun. Even to put them on.

It also helps to have spark plugs in the heads too...compression helps you out a lot. ;-)

I had to do this during my cam install/ top swap. You need to jam a big flat head screw driver in the flywheel and than than use a biggggg breaker bar (had a peice of pipe on my breaker bar) and while my friend held the screw driver than I cranked it and the bolt broke loose very easily. I have a massive impact gun and it did not work at all. Than you need to use a cat claw puller to get the balancer off. I had to use mine in a backwards fashion because autozone gave me the wrong one. GL
