After 7 years I'm finally at this point. I chipped pison #5. I just got an L32 longblock today and I'm thinking of just bolting it in and running it stock with the 3.8 wagon wheel . I have an XP cam, springs, and 3.4 on my old L32 block and after getting such piss poor gas mileage I'm leaning towards keeping stock and just packaging up the cam and other mods for storage.

For those who have revertted back to stock, best decision you made or do you regret it?

The main reason I'm considering going back to stock is so I can get better gas mileage. I was only averaging 18-24mpg with the XP cam setup and I miss the days of getting 30-34 mph on the interstate with my stock L36 I use my Regal for traveling long distance cross country. Burning premium gas at 24 mpg on the interstate with the cruise control on is horrible, I wouldn't mind so much if it was regular but using premium is a waste IMO. I will still have to use premium with a stock L32 but MPG ought to be closer 30 I would think. Even though I consider my wideband tune to be dialed-in I always thought I was driving a timebomb waiting for it to explode, having a stock car those worries would be gone. IDK

Curious what other members thoughts are after they demodded.

And email me at dlclarkii@gmail.com if you're interested in a spare GenV, LIM, and heads.

I would still do the basics and tune. With an L32, and basic breathing mods, you should still net mid 30'smpg on the highway, and make 20-30HP or so over stock, while maintaining reliability.

i "demodded" kind of.. i put my modded setup in another car (from my 97 to my 01) and put the stock motor back in the 97 till it knocked (about 1-2 weeks) then put in a stock l67 with hai, lunchbox tune, cat/ubend delete. and am very happy with the car plenty of pep and if driven decently milage is not too bad (have not run it far enough to know what the freeway driving can yeild)

but the one thing to remember with me is i still have a modded car do drive also. (which is being modded further) and i expect that i will get better freeway mpg with the modded car.

and the biggest reason i pulled the modded setup was to put it in the other car for these reasons
2dr vs 4dr
weak ass 97 trans
newer nicer car

thats it.

so i guess i am saying that a lesser build only could not should, but could get better milage, and for me 1-5 mpg vs. 50-100 whp when needing to run the same fuel either way is very worth it when i want it, even if it is every so often. and in thery a well tuned motor on higher octane should get better mpg and more power.

18-24 seems low i was getting 27 average when i owned the 01 with a converter not wanting to lock up.

but the 01 was a stripped down 2 dr with no options

i demodded because i cracked my trans case and was just done with the car. it having 156k miles on it also helped make that decision easier as well. i put a junkyard trans init for a few hundred bucks and it was great for a while, but is now giving up. after that i got in a fender bender, all of which has resulted in me getting my GXP. So i do not regret demodding that car one bit.

I demodded because I sold the car. If I ever bought another GTP (which I'd love to have one as a DD) it throw some speed daddy/ebay headers on it, 1.9 rockers, basic supporting mods and the almighty 3.4" pulley and stay there.
