Hey guys I'm still planning my RWD L67 swap and I'm needing to know the external dimensions of the L67. The main thing I'm concerned about is the height of the motor from the bottom of the motor to the top of the supercharger. The other dimensions don't matter. I need to know if i'm going to have clearance issues so I can plan ahead for a cowl hood if I need one.

I know that's not something that anyone will know off the top of their head but if someone has a block layin around that they can take some measurements of that would be completely awesome. Cause I don't have any way to take measurements yet.

I have no idea the dimensions, but I like the sound of this idea.

It'll be fun. RWD with a 6 speed manual. No automatic for this guy! I just need to know the height of the motor so I can decide what kind of hood to get.

-- 20 Jan 2011 20:32 --

Even just from the bottom of the crank pulley to the top of the S/C pulley since that should be w/in a few inches of the height of the motor. That's something that could be measured with the motor still in the car.

I could get you a ballpark height of an L36 tomorrow if that would help out some.

Yes Matt please do. That'll at least put me in the ballpark. I just saw somewhere a couple minutes ago that it was 2 feet 4 inches for the L67 but I haven't seen anything to confirm with. as tall as the RWD L36 intake was in the fbody I doubt it's much shorter than the L67. Thanks for helpin out.

Good point. I'll go take a tape measure and measure things up whenever my girlfriend gets here with the car. I'll try to get a couple different measurements like bottom of pan to top of LIM and such so if you know or can look up the height of the M90 it should be a really close guess.

Am I allowed to ask what this is going in?

Take all the measurements you want. I can make use out of any measurements you can come up with. Unfortunately I don't have any blocks layin around that I can measure or a car with one currently in.

It's a swap I've been planning for over a year now. Gonna get a big bumper (74-77) Camaro and do this. I know there are things I can drop in there with a lot more power but I want to do something completely different. Plus I know the 3800 motors like the back of my hand, much better than I do LS or gen III-IV truck motors. It's gonna be my car done my way. A lot of the camaro guys are itching for me to get going cause they love seeing something different than the norm. My buddies with the Camaro group are a very curious bunch.

I'd bet dollars to donuts it'd fit no sweat.
They used to put the higher deck version of this engine in Monzas.
Of course lots of guys have put big blocks in seventies Camaros.
I'm betting you'll find room for that turbo setup you've been thinking about to complete the swap "just right".

Hey, sorry I didn't get those measurements tonight. It was cold as balls out today and I couldn't get the car into the garage. Tomorrow for sure though I'll have them to you.

Alright Matt. Sounds good.

The Radius Kid, The other dimensions will fit for sure it may be too tall. The LS1 does not have a lot of clearance in a 2nd gen and if the L67 is much taller than the LS1 then it won't fit under a stock hood.

Isn't the LS3 in the GXP?

I think it was the LS4 in the GXP. I think the LS3 is the 6.2L and the LS4 is the 5.3L. I know several guys who have put the truck 5.3 motors into 2nd gens but they had to put LS1 (or LS6) intakes in order to make it fit under the stock hood. The truck intake would not fit under a stock hood. I think the L67 is in between the heights of those two motors which is why I'm trying to find out for sure.

Okay, I finally got some numbers. I measured the L26 in my old 04 (not that it's any higher than a the L36 I was going to measure). Here's what I came up with. I tried to be pretty accurate, but it was pretty hard to get a good measurement off the bottom of the oil pan since the splash guard was in the way.

-Bottom of pan to top of LIM = 21"
-Bottom of pan to top of fuel rail = 27"
-Bottom of pan to top of UIM = 26"ish
-Center of crank bolt to top of fuel rail = 19"
-Center of crank bolt to LIM = 13"
-Bottom of crank pulley to top of fuel rail = 22"
-Bottom of crank pulley to top of LIM = 16"

I would say all those measurements are within at least +/- .5" so what you read about the L67 being 28" seems pretty accurate. Hope this helps out a little. If you need any more measurements just let me know. I'm going to check again tomorrow when the car isn't wet and snowy to try to get a better measurement of the pan to top. If it's any different I'll let you know.

Thanks Matt. So yeah what I saw about 28" should be accurate. So that puts the L67 about 3-4" taller than the LS1. I'm still trying to figure out just how much room an LS1 has under a 2nd gen stock hood as a comparison. The two responses that I did get were assuming that I meant L76 (a truck motor apparently) and gave absolutely useless responses since they didn't even answer the question at hand.

Id say you just throw a cowl on anyways :)

Lol I might anyway since it's going to be an RS clone and the hood is gonna be solid colored anyway. If it was going to have stripes I would try my hardest to make it fit under a stock hood. IMO stripes look like dog crap on a cowl hood.

You're right....late night brain fart.
Here's one for you:

Use the Z28 cowl induction hood and tie the flapper into the manifold pressure.
That should create an interesting inlet.

The Z28 cowl induction hood was only used on the 80 and 81 Z28s. Everything else had a regular hood. I'm pretty sure it would fit but I dunno how I'd be able to rig it to open like you're suggesting.

And Mike no shaker hood. I'm not wanting it to stick out like that. Screw that LOL. The only thing other I would think is if there was some kind of ram air hood I could rig up. That would be the only one I'd consider

Rigging it up should be a piece of cake.
IIRC,those hoods used a vacuum modulator off of a transmission to control the flapper door.
All you need is a line connected to a boost sensing port....vacuum goes low and voila, door opens.

I know, I was just messing with ya. They make some shorter cowl hoods from what I can remember.

One of my Camaro buddies with an LS1 out of a GTO in his 76 is gonna measure his hood clearance this weekend. He thinks he may have 6" of clearance. If that's the case then it should fit under a stock hood. It's still gonna be an RS clone (meaning no stripes) but I still prefer the stock hood anyway. We'll see though when he gets back with his measurements.
