I was having some hard starting issues so what originally was to be a tune up turned into a mystery. I picked up some new ac delco plugs and wires and installed with no issues. It fired right up after the install and even sounds smoother. Went for a test drive and everything went great until I gave it more throttle. Whenever the sc was starting to really whine it felt like there was a bad misfire. Once in a while the engine light would flash about 10 times and then stay off. I took it to Autozone to see if there were any codes and there were none. Anything over 1/2 throttle I will feel and hear the misfire. It's a sputtering sound.

I looked for the obvious vacuum hoses and such that may have been knocked off. I didn't unplug any sensors so I know it isn't that either. My car is all stock in the engine department and unfortunately I don't have access to a scanner.

Looking for suggestions.

Front o2 sensor would be my guess.

By front o2 sensor do you mean the one by the firewall that is in the way of plug #6?

Yeah, the other one, rear o2 sensor, is behind the catalytic converter.

Maybe a coil pack? I had to do plugs wires and coil packs to make mine 100% again after I had misfires.

Yeah, could try a coil too. Having a code thrown would help a lot on this one though cause then you could see what cylinder is misfiring and swap around coils to see if the misfire follows.

I.

If you put it under load and the car shakes and the engine light flashes its a definite misfire. Swing by a place that has a decent scanner and there will be something in the history. However I've noticed my car likes to just give a p0300- misfire detected code. Which in our case would do no good. Quite frankly check the gap on your plugs. Check the tops of the coils where the plug wire clips on they like to rust. Maybe even return it all and put fresh stuff on. I don't think id spend the money on an 02 sensor but that's just me

Thanks for all the advice. I checked the gap on the plugs and they were .060 when I put them in. I did notice some rust on 2 posts on the coil packs. I cleaned them up and put on some dielectric grease before installing the new wires. Could an old battery cause this issue? I was trying to wait until spring to replace it.

This is one time where I wished the engine light would come on, not like those times when it's for a silly thing like a loose gas cap.

I've only seen a bad battery made chryslers do goofy things. Maybe try ohming out each coil if you have an ohm meter. One with significantly higher or lower resistance could be the culprit.

Start with the cheap stuff first, recheck the spark plug gap and then check your wires. I had the same thing happen to me and it was a kinked spark plug wire and would only misfire under a heavier load.

Check the resistance on your coil packs also

Isn't resistance measured in ohms lol

To refresh my memory, to check ohms I go from each terminal to ground, right?

You have a primary and secondary side.. Ill have to look at our coil pack design and tell ya how exactly i cant remember without looking at one.

Update. I replaced all 3 coils and still have the misfire. The good news is the engine light is on! It is a misfire on 6. I put the old plug back in and it still misfires. I'm going to put the old wire back on to see if that makes it goes away. If that isn't the problem I don't know what's left.

I want to get my own scanner so I can do simple things like reset codes and look up codes. It's something I've wanted for a while but have been putting it off. What hand held scanner would you recommend? Does the scanner need to be CAN compatible?

Could be an injector?

You could try swapping injectors and see if the misfire follows, or take the easier route and run some fuel injection cleaner through the gas tank, and see if the misfire clears up. I use the Lucas stuff every other tankful to keep the injectors happy. Haven't had to replace one yet.

Injector, contact between the coil pack and the ICM, or the ICM itself.

Problem solved! The new plug wire was bad. I put the new plug back in and replaced the new wire with the old one and the misfire went away. I guess sometimes you get a bad one. I'm taking back the new wire to get another one. Thankfully they will give me just the one I need so I won't have to take them all off and return the set.
