This was by no means a perfect test, mostly given the changes in ambient air temperature (a difference of 8.92* F), but it's better than nothing. I am led to believe that given the same ambient air temperature, the difference in power would have been slightly greater, as the open cone test was run under hotter ambient temperature. I think it is also worth pointing out that the open cone also allowed more supercharger "whine" to escape and seemed to draw the attention of more fairgoers.

Food for thought....nice thread. I'm running open cone because I haven't had time to complete my FWI. Hmmmm....I will probably just leave it open coned.

Yeah, I'd be happy to try a fenderwell intake if someone was willing to lend us one for an afternoon, since this doesn't in any way disprove the function of those.

Here's a quick tutorial:
1. Purchase a 9" cone intake for $45.
2. Remove intake box.
3. Attach cone to mass air flow sensor
4. Profit

...it's particularly cheap and easy. That $150 "cold air" box is now just a paperweight.
Also, I doubt a cone intake would void your warranty... but others should know better than me.

Was contemplating intake setups. Was already thinking about going FWI until I could afford a Thrasher "box". But now I think I'm just going to do a FWI and call it good. Granted, I'm NA and that's different...

Thanks for posting the DynoJet. So mad I missed GM Nat's this year. Living in Kentucky is really messing with me getting to go to any Carlisle shows. (Since it's like 10 hours away now instead of 2.... argh.)

Interesting.
Were the tests done with the hood up and a fan blowing throught the radiator?

a very cool test. but i wonder how one could mock the ram air affect (of having a box vs not) as in higher speeds or racing.?

Yes, hood was up. Next time we get the chance, we'll test with a fully heat-soaked engine bay, open cone, and the hood down.

GM was a pretty weak show... otherwise I probably couldn't have gotten on the dyno twice.

Wish I could test a FWI. Frankly, the added fabrication time and maintenance time... and debatable, unproven gains are enough to steer me clear of one. Nothing in the world simpler than open cone. Though, I suppose I should have put the Thrasher box up for sale before I posted this... so much for thinking ahead.

What I would do is install the open cone and do a WOT test on the road, engine warmed up.
Record the max MAF at say 3,500 & 5,000 rpm.
Install the cold air kit immediately and redo the test.
That should give you a pretty good idea.
