Hey guys,

Going to be as direct as possible here.

I noticed lately my car runs hotter. Which I find odd early in the morning 5am when its now 45 degrees. I can smell coolant outside the car if I put my face near the hood, but I couldnt find a leak. I've sat with it runing and throttling it and checking underneath, and around the water pump. Nothing at all. not a single drip. I figured if its leaking badly it will make its way to ground somehow.

I had my engine changed over the summer and after I got it back it still smelled like coolant apparently some spilled in places and it was just burning off when the engine was hot. I got new gaskets all around and I saw no signs of it leaking. The original motor had 150,000 and was replaced with a 90,000 mile motor. Done under warrenty. I had the water pump, the lower gasket, and finally a bearing on the orginal motor so I know those systoms.

Fast foward 4 Months later. I've been driving 25 miles to work at our new facility and I noticed the engine gets hot now. I've never had it get this hot before, even in heavy summer traffic its never been been pass the quarter mark on the temp guage. I live in Maine to give you an idea of our traffic its nothing like New york or other populated areas. Now it goes to the half way mark and sometimes just above it.
Now I still get heat, and no low coolant warnings at all. I did notice a small plastic black elbow (guessing I say 1/2 inch to 5/8s wide) above my water pump there is some green slime directly underneath it. If I had to guess I'd say I found my leak, but its not a big leak like coolant being flung everywere. Its more than seapage but less than a dripping out if you get the idea.

Also is it possible my Tstat is stuck? My engine light is now on. I havent scanned it yet, but I think its doing the odvious.

Another thing, when I take off in the morning I can hear gurgling noises like when you blow air thru a straw in water. That tells me there is air in the system somewhere. I've tried to add coolant but I cant get anymore in. I know our cars get hot at times but there is something else going on in this case.

I'm going to replace the Tstat as its the cheapest place to start and see what happens from there.

How can I get the air bubbles out so I can make sure its full?

I hope I explained enough, I wish I was good at riping into motors. My expertise is computer hardware, lol.

Thanks in advance guys,
Aaron

On top of the thermostat housing is a screw. It is the bleeder screw for the cooling system. Get the system hot, and open it until the air bubbles are gone. Don't pull the screw ALL the way out...because you can. But, you don't need to.
