So I recently found some coolant by the injectors for cylinders 1 and 3. Also there was some coolant underneath the supercharger in the two voids near those injectors. Is my LIM gasket bad? It doesn't leak too much coolant. The issue is, I'm in South Dakota for the next couple weeks, and then I head back to Wisconsin which is 800 miles away. I don't have the tools with me to replace the gasket if its bad. So first, do you think thats the problem? Or could it be easier or worse? Also, whatever it is, would I be able to drive 800 miles safely while making sure there is enough coolant? Also, there doesnt seem to be any coolant in the oil. The only reason I noticed it was because it puddled up enough to start dripping down onto the exhaust and smoking.

Any advice would help.

Thanks

Hi Kyle

:P

Coolant around the injectors and around the base of the supercharger (or the Intake manifold for you GT drivers) is a tell-tale sign of a failed LIM gasket. I drove my car with a bad LIM for as much as 30K miles before I ever noticed it (I always had the engine cover on and noticed it one day at the track when I took it off), and it was probably bad before I even got the car at 109K miles...

On a good note, the coolant is leaking outside of the motor, and if the oil looks good it's not leaking in, or at least not leaking into the oil. I would say to get it taken care of ASAP, but I do not think your car is going to die if you take the 800 mile trip. Just take it easy, stop reasonably often and keep an eye on the coolant level/coolant temp.

I had a very small coolant leak on my supercharged GTP near the injectors, which was in fact the LIM gasket. It was probably a pinhole exiting to the outside (although who knows how bad it was where you couldn't see it.) When I asked the same question (should I get it fixed?), there seemed to be concensus on this forum that I was playing with fire if I ignored it. Ironically, the Pontiac dealer basically said it wasn't a big deal. I took the advice I got here and had a shop fix it (not the dealer). Of course, I then had to check out my wife's N/A grand prix, and wouldn't you know it, it had the same problem....... had it fixed, too.

It's an all-too-common problem. It's not a good idea to just let it go, but most likely nothing bad will happen in another 1k miles or less. I would definitely get it fixed as soon as it's feasibly possible to do so, but if you have to make the trip then you have to make the trip.

Yeah, Im in rapid city, but I dont know when I'll have time to do it. I have a car show and a wedding this weekend, and then the following weekend im going up to sturgis to work on my rifle, and then the next weekend I'm leaving. But I might be able to get it done at school I'll have to check tomorrow.
