So when I drive for awhile especially on a hot day the engine will suddenly cut out and lose all power. I press the gas pedal and nothing happens then all of the sudden it surges forward and rpms go up but then eventually it will lose all power and stall and I have to sit with the car off for about 20 minutes in order to drive it another 20. The engine temperature is fine and the car is not overheating. The SES light is on, I am guessing it has something to do with the O2 sensor being faulty. Any ideas?

I am going to make a wild guess, and say that it could be something electronic going out, and just takes it a bit to get warm enough to short out.

My 97 did something similer to this, and would randomly stall with no warning, and sometimes would and sometimes not restart. I was happy when it did not restart so I could trace it down. I found a relay under the hood that had a bit of discoloration to it and it was shorting out when it got warm and got worse the longer it kept shorting, ( it was the relay that feeds the main pcm so when it would short the pcm.had no power.)

These types of issues can be a pain to find, but when it dies check the basics! Spark and fuel. Grab a test light and see if you have injector pulse. And go from there.

It's an 05, and thanks, after doing a lot of research these past few days I have figured it is probably electrical based. Now to narrow it down...I am guessing it is the fuel pump relay since it doesnt lose electrical power but rather it loses all rpms and acceleration, also when it really bogs down it will lose abs and power steering, scary while on the interstate!

Does the series 3 have a fuel pump resistor? It seems like a lot of 97-03s had this problem and I suspect it might be the same for me.

Not sure if you have the resistor or not but the relay would.be easy and cheap ( free if you swap it for another on the car)

only 97-99 have the rester after that GM switched to a diffrent pump. 2000-2003 use a single speed pump and the GT and GTP use the same pump

If the car is an '05, I would consider that the throttle body is failing, or one of the sensors that control it. I hate throttle by wire, and would imagine that the heat from the engine bay would start messing with stuff like this.
