i'm getting ready to change my blown head gasket and was wondering what all is needed to complete this task. i know for sure i'll need oil and coolant, some blue thread locker for the LIM bolts, black RTV for the LIM gaskets, RTV for the SC, the head gasket itself of course, and a torque wrench. is there anything else i may need?

In my opinion using thread lock on LIM bolts would be a mistake. use thread sealer...aka liquid teflon. if i was doing the job heres what i would get

Head gaskets
valve covers
LIM gaskets
supercharger gasket and O-rings
EGR gaskets

Oil get 6 quarts so you can run a quart through before filling it
coolant

black RTV silicone for obvious reasons

make sure you clean the block off and all carbon before reassembling. top of the piston heads, and the surface between the head and block. as always machining the head is recomended but not required.

its really an easy job just takes a good amount of time.

i think i remembered everything but dont quote me lol

be careful when removing the manifold nuts and bolts as they might brake. use a little heat if necesary.

Get these head studs, it will make the process of installing the heads much easier and it will decrease the chance of the failure again. Also get some copper spray from autozone or Advanced.

We just did this on my buddy's pace car. I would just buy a top end gasket kit from the parts store. Most forget about the coolant o rings, thermo gasket, elbow coming out of the manifold, and injector o rings. The whole install is pretty straightforward and will take a few hours to complete. Hopefully you don't have the same issue as him. He thought it was just the headgasket, but was smart and took it to the machine shop. Come to find out there was actually a small crack in the rear head. Not visible to the naked eye.

There's actually 2 coolant elbows. I've never had them not break when removing the tensioner housing. We never do a head gasket job at my shop without machining the head and doing valve seals...it'd be silly not to.

yeah there's 2. if you buy the replacement elbows at a parts store they'll sell them together anyway. 3 bucks here. and yeah, i'm definitely going to clean up the heads a bit, smooth things out, remove rough castings. nothing TOO crazy, well until i get serious about my build anyway lol

If you don't have these all ready, purchase the aluminum LIM gaskets since you will be tearing all of this apart anyway and switch to green coolant instead of dex-cool.

Def. Agree with green coolant the dex coool just clumps up and causes issues over time. Do they even make the original plastic lim gaskets? Lol

Ive never had an issue with the rear elbow breaking. It's always the one connected to the LIM.
