Shoot, an intake in the winter just makes things louder. Love it!!!!! No whine out of my humble little N/A, obviously (some day it will have an S/C though), but cold starts make the car sound like a tornado under the hood.

But yeah, you are missing out on half the fun of a S/C if you can't hear that darn thing whine like a pig.

Def great to see the looks on people's faces when they hear you drive by. Even just mild acceleration you can hear it whine a bit. Sounds louder when you remove cover, and have a fiberglass hood and its winter out:D

Well, i picked up a K&N filter today and installed it, and.... the whine is back!!!! It sounds freakin awesome now! Im not sure if i should just leave the stock piece before the MAF sensor on, or replace it with PVC or something simmilar.

Get some ducting in there so it will place filter farther away. I went to a supply store, they sold the correct diameter drain tubing that looks exactly like the stock material they used with smooth inside. Was like 3-5 dollars and came with the clamps on both ends. Nice orange GP:D

My intake setup:

Here is older setup but shows the tubing that i was talking about (Should help extend out your filter and make it so you can create a shield:

That looks awesome, good pics too, i was just usin my crappy blackberry, too lazy to fire up the real camera :P! My filter can only go a little bit farther before it touches, but im not too concerned about the heat building up in the winter :P Before summer, i am going to try and find some lexan and build a little enclosure kind of like the wizaired and thrasher ones, or just find a used casing. I think i will try and find something to replace that rubber before the MAF tommorow. Looks kinda restrictive. Too bad that MAF has to be there though it kind of complicates things.

If you can find that tubing that is pictured on 3rd image the maf section becomes an issue of the past. My "heat shield" is more for holding up the filter then it is blocking heat. It also gives the PCM a place to rest. The insulator material I put on it doesn't help much, im considering removing it. However, something is more then nothing, right?

Right! And here's the thing guys. When I had my GTP with the K&N setup, the heat shield was a joke, but I monitored IAT's on my interceptors and when I was moving, IAT's would never be more than 10-15* above ambient temperature. All these guys make such a big deal about a hot air intake, but when you're accelerating down a dragstrip, the cooler air is being forced into the engine bay anyhow, and if you're stuck in traffic somewhere, IAT's will rise, but you're not racing either, so it shouldn't really be a problem.

The main need for heat shield when drag racing is probably the time before you run your car. You sit there and heat soak engine and then do a run, temps will be higher.

The engine is gonna heat soak no matter what. That's when having an electric water pump and fans can save you. Flip those on and let them run in the staging lanes., An Intercooler helps as well.

Don't get me wrong, the heat shield is a good idea. I'm just saying you don't need to fully enclose the filter like a wizaird or thrasher box does, unless you want to.

Ya, easier to change filter when you have access right there. I wouldn't put a cover over mine either because there is a port on my hood that directs "cool" air into the engine. However there are lots of curves until it finally makes it to filter, but I like to not block what little air it brings in, im sure it doesn't hurt.
