Good day,

I have a K&N CAI that I really love, except one thing....and I have brought this up in the past...and am looking for some reasonable solutions to help solve the issue.
I posted on here a few times that I hear a noise that I have described as a "flutter" or " exhaust leak" or a "diesel sound" in the direction of my CAI when the engine is at the beginning stages of being under load and before the SC really kicks in. I posted a video on here and everyone seemed to think it is normal; I called K&N and they said it is normal. Some of you have heard a similar sound in your vehicles, but mine only occurs under load. I did not hear this prior to installing the K&N, probably because the stock airbox plastic is thick plastic. My custom tuner said he has never heard this on a CAI.

I have become hypersensitive to this noise and is driving me batty! LOL I would really like to develop a solution to mitigate the noise, while maintaining a nicely sized CAI... since I like the performance and do not even mind the SC whine since it sounds purposeful.

Any suggestions on how to solve....keeping the K&N? ..... knowing that I will get a 3.6 pulley and rockers early next year.

Would a Wizaired covered box really help? I am desperate enough to get one and try it out.

Maybe some hypnosis?? LOL

Sorry for bringing this up again.....but I wany to finally resolve this.

It sounds like a normal sound from the cai... But I havent heard that sound haha so my guess is as good as yours. Try uninstalling the cai and reinstalling it. Is the filter clean? Everything hooked up properly? its not rattling or anything is it? I have not had one problem with my k&n and it makes the noise a regular cai makes but is pretty hard to hear anymore because of my exhaust haha. I wish I could be more of a help to you : (

Also, check your filter for a tear maybe? Or maybe its not your cai but something else.... Someone hopefully will chime in!

Hey there,

I have done all of the above but to no avail. I thought it could be an exhaust leak, but then the shop I deal with could not find any indication of such and the noise it coming directly from the filter area. The filter is fine, no tears, no damage and is not dirty. I would put back my Stock airbox to double check, but I accidentally tossed part of it away.

Just to verify one thing....the MAF sensor has an arrow on the housing and that arrow should point towards the throttle body....right? :)

Thanks.

There's not really a good way to get rid of it other than go back to stock. Bigger piping + piping with fewer bends + more free flowing filter + plastic tube and not rubber = higher velocity of air, more volume of air, and therefore more noise (rubber pipe plus that huge plastic airbox which is designed to be quite obviously absorbs sound vibration). You could try a Wizair box, but thelonggone has one and I still hear the noise you're describing in his videos. That's just how modding goes. From factory cars are supposed to be quite and comforatable i.e. soft motor mounts, restrictive and silent intakes and exhausts, soft suspensions. If you want a faster car which can take the corners then compromises need to be made. If that CAI noise bothers you, a cam would drive you even more insane.

Heck the intake on my GF's GT makes that loudest howling noise when the engine is in it's warmup open loop state but it's completely normal, just a sideeffect of modding.

Yes, arrow points in the direction of air flow.

Also, sometimes the fuel injectors make a little more noise when you start modding, so they make a little louder ticking noise than stock i.e. diesel engine type noise.

Thanks!

I feel like this Forum is like a Modding Support group.... LOL

It is difficult when you want it all! :)

My wife says mine always sounds like a diesel truck. :) I would get a louder exhaust to help you live with it, if it is not a problem (which I doubt it is).

Yeah my wife keeps on asking what is wrong with my Car! So I will tell her that my support group thinks I should get a Cat Back. :) Dang...too many options for modding this car. Well, that will have to wait till I get a new pulley and rockers. Then 18" rims, new tires, struts.......then......cat back! :)

if you want to try and eliminate some of the sound you could try to get creative and try to fab up some kind of lid for the kn heat shield and line the inside of the heat shield with say dynomat or something equal. Im sure that would quiet it down a little bit.

You mean...something like this?? a Jiffy Pop CAI :) I wrapped the K&N baffle with Fel Pro Reflect shield wrap on both the outside and inside. I also added a Heatshield Reflect-A-Shield panel as a cover to try to seal off any heat and noise from the top portion. It really does nothing for the noise, but perhaps I will try your idea for some fun experimentation.
