I'm changing the water pump on my '99 GP GT. After removing the serpentine belt and water pump pulley, I come to the last bolt in the water pump, and it seems to be hidden behind the power steering pump pulley. Am I going to have to remove the entire power steering unit just to get this last bolt out? Any tips for someone doing this for the first time is also greatly appreciated. Picture included, I hope it's not too large. The bolt in question is boxed.

Yes P/S pump has to come off  . There are 2 hex bolts sitting behind the pulley. If you put the socket through the P/S pulley hole and feel around you'll find them. They are at the 12 and 6 (or more like 1 and 7ish) oclock position.
When you get the W/P off make sure you clean the mounting surface very well and put some thread sealant or Teflon tape on the bolts when you reinstall them.

Here's a reference picture from the service manual to give you an idea where the bolts are.

You can just move the PS pump over a bit, here's a write up from another GP board:

"WP replacement mini-writeup"

1. Empty Coolant from Radiator drain
2. Remove Acc. belt (move tensioner pulley bolt counterclockwise)
3. Remove the coolant reservoir tank
4. Remove the Tensioner pulley with a 15mm for clearance, if necessary (clockwise)
5. Remove the 4 WP pulley bolts with a 8mm
6. Remove the 2 Power Steering Pump bolts with a 13mm(bolts are at 12:00 and 6:00 accessable through the PS pulley holes)
7. Push PS pump 1 inch to the side
8. Remove all 8 WP bolts with a 13mm and a 10mm(3 are 13mm/5 are 10mm)
9. Collect extra coolant until flow stops(a few cups)
10. Apply RTV to both sides of the gasket and WP bolts
11. WP bolts should be torqued to 11lbs+80*/Tensioner pulley bolt at 36lbs/WP pulley bolts at ~9lbs
12. Reinstall everything and fill the coolant back up
13. Run for a few minutes, check for leaks, and bleed the system

Yeah, it just needs moved. The lines and all that jazz stay on. I guess I should have worded my post a little better.

Ok that's great news, I thought I might have had to take off the P/S pulley, but didn't realize that I could reach thru to unbolt it and shift it over. I'll keep you all updated.

Also, for anyone else doing this I found it easier to break the 8mm bolts on the W/P before taking the belt off, instead of struggling to loosen them with the pulley spinning free (essentially moving step 5 on blackarrow's list to step 2).

Pulling the actually pulley off the pump would suck big time.

And yeah, leaving the belt on helps quite a bit. Hope it all is/did go well.

I've pulled that pulley off of two PS pumps successfully........................out of 5.

Just unbolt the whole unit as stated, its quick and easy
