If you break one, the car won't run. Some belt engines are interference engines, meaning that if you break a belt, you clatter the engine.

Yeah, the GP's use an actual chain versus a belt like a lot of imports do. If you were driving an import and had about 60K-70K miles on it, there'd be a really good chance that your timing belt would be stretched.

Think of it this way, if the timing chain is broke, the connection between the crankshaft and cam is gone and the cam won't turn which in turn won't allow the valves to open and there will be no air through the intake valve and thus no combustion.

/\If you're lucky.

A friend of mine has a single slammer Neon. A broken timing belt meant he got to buy a new engine.

Speaking of which are our engines interference?

You might not have spark. The engine would crank, but would sound like it had no compression, because in some cylinders, it doesn't.

Hey there,

How long do timing chains usually last under normal driving conditions?

Thanks

There is no recommended interval for changing chains. They are designed to last the life of the engine.
