the stock pf47 filter and mostly all of its aftermarket replacements are being made differently now. for more info, see this thread:

http://www.clubgp.com/newforum/tm.asp?m ... age=single

basically this change may be an issue for us, because in some cases some cars have suffered engine failure after an oil change where the new e-core filter was used.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub ... ber=353539

cliffnotes: in some cases, the nylon "ribcage" inside the new ecore filters can collapse and case sever engine damage. im nto sure how likely any of this is to happen, and there's a lot more information out there if youre really concerned. just wanted to pass this along though.

heres a few pics for comparison between the old and new filter designs:

I would be willing to bet that the PF52 is done up the same way.

you want to know what happened? Delphi sold the parts and the name to another company and they make a product that looks the same but is cheap.

The PF52 is also switching over the to e-core design, but I do agree that it's a good alternative for cars with stock suspension or that are lowered slightly. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone lowered more than 1.5 inches, as the control arm could crush the filter if something were to happen (hit a big pothole for example).

Yeah, and instead of keeping filling the "saved" space that the ecore offers with an an extra 3/4" of filter media they just shortened the entire case of the filter...

k&n (overpriced), mobil 1 (same) and wix are the only filters I'm aware of that are not using the new e-core design.

I heard about this a couple of weeks ago... SO, I went to an autoparts store, and looked at every PF47 filter they had... I ended up getting ten of the old design. Thankfully they still have more, I may just go back. But the guy at the register thought I was insane, just the look on his face! But when I heard it I was angry because they were one of the last filters that had not switched, for a decent price atleast.

Do I dare say it, but Fram filters are no longer the crappy plastic on the inside. They are metal again! Still dont know that I would use them.

Thanks for the heads up, Kyle! I just went over to advance auto parts and bought three of the old design, and there were two different long numbers for them: 25010792 and 19256042

The 25010792 number SHOULD be the old design, as that number has been around for a LONG time.

Yep I had a few of those stashed in my garage, but I didn't realize that the 19256042 was also the old design. There were a few Ecore PF47 and PF52s mixed in, when I picked one up I thought the box was empty...

Depending on where you get your filters from, the part numbers may not be the same. A GM dealer will probably have no 25010792 filters. They would buy them in a "DuraPack" format, which is a bulk quantity, at a lower cost, under a different part numer.

Here's a site with comparisons/descriptions of most of the filters on the market:
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/index.html

Here are some interesting quotes from that site (Champion Labs make the new Ecore Delco filters):
Quote:
Interestingly, two performance filter brands that are manufactured by Champion Labs still use the old design. They are Mobil 1 and K&N. Examples of each purchased in 2008 were not "Ecore" filters. It seems that any old stock should have been sold by now. This raises the possibility that the "Ecore" design, with it's fiber end caps and plastic core tube, are not suitable for high pressure/flow use.

Here's what they have to say about K&N filters:
Quote:
It's a white Mobil 1 filter with a nut welded to the back. It's made by Champion Labs using what I call their "performance" design instead of the "Ecore". Save the $2-$3 plus shipping and get the Mobil 1.

I've been running K&N's HP2001? longer filter. No issues with it and my autopart store carries them in stock locally. The nut comes in handy because I find it hard to get the rubber strap around it to turn it a little to tighten just a tad. Instead I just use a quick light wrench turn and am done.

^^The last time I bought a K&N oil filter (made by Champion Laboratories) they still used the old design, like the old AC Delco oil filters. I still buy the old AC Delco filters as well, when I can find them.

Will Delco pony up if this is a known issue and your engine is damaged?

Mobile 1 or Wix or K&N's (pretty much paying for the name K&N on a Mobile 1 filter though), or if balling on a budget, Puralator's are actually pretty good for the price (PureONEs are even better, all Puralators are better than e-core crap that's for sure). Just stay away from ALL FRAM's and the new ACDelco filters

I use regular L10111 Puralators on the 3800's and 3x00's and they seem to be just fine. I cut one open for fun and they were very sturdy inside and the material had quite substantial surface area for the price.

Fram = "orange can of death"

Ironically my Cabriolet had a Fram filter on it from the PO....... along with a trashed bottom end, but that was due to being run low on oil. I'm still blaming the filter though
