These newer engines are fairly sensitive to oil viscosity/oil wieghts. I'm not 100%, but I think using 10W30 may set an engine light on the newer gen 3800's.

I run 10W30 in the summer time because of the warmer temps and I do not get any CEL's because of it.

L67/ L36 SII motors run 10W30 and there is hardly a difference between those and the SIII motors so you will be fine with 10W30.

As mentioned Series II's all run 10w. Since you're in Ohio I'd personally stick with 5w if you intend on driving the car deep into the winter months though but it's really not that big of an issue. These aren't little fragile motors that will break stuff if you put slightly heavier oil in the crankcase.

Boy 10w40 never seems to hurt mine, but it is synthetic and not driven in the winter..

I run 10w30 in the other car that does go through winter never had problems yet.

I usually go up a weight from recomended just because I tend to drive a little harder and like to have the little extra viscosity when it gets good and hot. , besides unless your going from like 5w30 to 10w40 or 20w50 the changes are minimal.

No, the 10W30 will not, I repeat not hurt any of the 3800s'. I work for the corporation the makes the additive packages for nearly all oil companies world wide, this includes pass car, heavy duty diesel, two cycle etc... The 5W30 oil for these cars has to do with fuel economy so GMs' fleet can meet the fleet requirements for fuel economy. So they recommend 5W30 for the car because that's what it was tested with for the cafe test & it gives better fuel economy than a 10W30 or say 10W40. The fact is, that in these traditional engines with standard tecnology, a 10W30 or 40 will protect the engine better from wear and frictional loads than a 5W30. If you were running the newer type engine with duel over head cams and VVT that would be different. These have small oil passages for the regulation of those devises, so a 5W30 is important for those types of motors, but not the 3800.
