Noticed my steering was getting noisier recently, kinda started screaming as I turned the wheel. Worst case scenario; new steering rack, which for me in the UK would definately be a disaster. Read up it, and eventually found the power steering fluid reservoir, which on a 98 GP is hidden behind the alt! Mine was covered in crap so I couldn't see it anyway.

Topped up the fluid, which wasn't even up to the dipstick, and no more noise.....result!

I wish mine was that simple. mine's making noise again, but I am full of fluid. Gah!

white4d96 Try to bleed the air out of the system. If that doesn't do the trick, it could be your pump going bad.
