Well..I'll be doing my oil change today, so I ended up buying the K&N 1001 Oil Filter, and Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5w30 oil. Question is...

..is the K&N Oil Filter good? It was pretty expensive, so I'm hoping that it's a good filter.

There were others like ACDelco, FRAM, Mobile 1, and couple of other ones, but I decided to go with K&N just to try it out and wanted to know if there were any advantages to using the most expensive filter on the shelf.

When I change the oil.....It's Mobil 1 filter for me!!!
(I'm not certain about the differences between the two)

The K&N, Mobil 1, and AmsOil filters are designed to be used with synthetic oils, and will give you a real extension in oil change intervals. They still need to be changed, but you can run then longer than the cheap-o filters.

Hmm...thanks! Well...I did my oil change today, used the K&N Filter and Mobil 1 Full Synthetic oil...and OH BOY Does my car love it!!! Ran like a champ afterwards!!! The engine starts up and runs a lot smoother and more aggressive when I give it some gas...but... Since this oil change was the first initial switch from conventional to full synthetic, I now gotta keep an eye out for any leaks and what not.

lol.

the k&n filter is good in the aspect that it doesnt use the new ecore design, however the price is ridiculous.

K&N FTW .... been using it for about a year and a half since I switched to synthetic. About $15 for a filter is ridunkulous, but well worth it. As far as oil, I've been using Castrol Edge, my car has loved it. I went back to Mobil 1 this oil change for money purposes ($8/qt. for Edge is crazy), not a big fan of Mobil 1, but it will suffice until my next change.

seems like i've read somewhere that the K&N and the Mobil 1 were the same filter re-branded.

I doubt that. The cases aren't the same. The K&N has the nut on the bottom, and Mobil 1 doesn't.

See my link above...

Quote:
K&N

It's a white Mobil 1 filter with a nut welded to the back. It's made by Champion Labs using what I call their "performance" design instead of the "Ecore". Save the $2-$3 plus shipping and get the Mobil 1.

Both made by Champion Labs

Champion Labs makes the SuperTech filters that Wal-Mart sells, too. Save another $10.

Thankfully the only thing that has changed on the K&N filters is the artwork on the box & filter: http://www.knfilters.com/oilfilter.htm

But for $14 it should jump out of the box and install itself... ;-)

LMAO, nice. Ive been using K&N, Mobil1, and ACDelco filters off and on, stared using "semi" syntheic and have now switched to fully synthetic, and I honestly can't tell a difference between any of them(the filters). The only difference/advantage I would expect would be better filtration and maybe a longer interval between oil changes like these guys have already stated. i mean, that extra $8-$10 has gotta be good for something than reducing race weight. LOL corey

To those running extended oil change intervals, I'd highly recommend using a fleece/synthetic filter. Most German cars with oil change intervals >10,000 mi specify fleece filters. Some owners have seen the paper filters break down when they're used for extended periods. This link (same site RKELC posted above) will give you a description of each type of filter, including what the element's made of.

I just started using Wix. I've heard nothing but good about them, and they're 1/2 the price of the Mobil1 filters I was using.

I was lucky enough to catch a sale on 5 quarts of royal purple and a k & n for 30 bucks and honestly I will most likely pay the full price from now on to keep using the pair.

You should be good! When I went from conventional to Synthetic nothing happen to my car. Good choice of oil and I would recommend you the Mobil 1 oil filter too, since that's what I have been using on my ride for almost 2 yrs

I always go sale-hunting and get whatever synthetic oil-change deal with a K&N filter (this time I got Valvoline full synth and K&N for $27ish at Advance) and I won't ever go back. Big difference and IMO worth the cash. Plus that nut is just so damn handy for getting the filter off (big hands+bad filter wrench+pregen=B***h!)

the 1" nut on the bottom makes up for it, ive always had to fight tooth and nail with filter wrenches, so the premium for the filter is worth it in my oppinion.

K&N filter and Royal Purple are all my GP ever sees (well other then the mobil 1 leaking out of my roomates vette)

I use a K&N for 2 reasons. 1: Because it has great filtration and flow which is important to me because I run Mobil 0W-40 (euro formula) and 2: Because of that nut! It's a tight fit under the Goat and that nut makes life sooooooooooooo much easier! Plus, I can properly torque the filter to spec with that nut on there.

Now, the kicker for me isn't the price because when all is said and done, I already have $49 in oil anyways as I have to buy mine by the qt. and the Goat requires 6.5 qts. So an extra $5 compared to the Mobil filter makes it worth it to me.

When I had my CompG, I would only use Mobil 1 5W-30 and a Puralator PureONE filter. I would still use one, but I had read that article above a while ago and I want to keep the oil flowing freely in the goat! The PureONE filter is very well made and only about $6.
