No ya dont. I've watched someone buff scratches from door glass. It took forever and a day, and I'm not sure what they used, but it can be done.

Ultimately, it's easier, COULD be cheaper, to just replace the glass.

Just a thought here but, how hard can it be? Not being a smart a$$ but, its buffing glass. I know that glass is harder than paint, so it will take longer, but its still buffing glass. Now dont start bashing me, I have never done it, never seen it done. Its just that it dosent sound to hard. Is there more to it that I dont know about?

Yes it takes a while, if you do it yourself( JCW.com) has a kit, isnt expensive.

Ive done many, restored glass on about 7 cars from the 60's and 70's with OEM FACTORY glass as well as my 47 chevy fleetline business coupe, I didnt mind the length it took.

I have the exact same problem on my 05 GP, and its only on the driver's window. Its on the outside of the window, and there are multiple scratches that run from the top to the bottom of the window. its ugly as hell and really stands out with tinted windows as a background. You can obviously tell something, such as the window regulator motor or something, is scratching the shit out of it as the window moves up and down. i I say they issue a TSB, whaddya guys think??

The scratches come from stuff caught between the outer window seal and the glass. Obviously, Pontiac has no control over that.

correct. but they do have control over the fact that, for most 04+ guys, we paid well over $15,000 for a new vehicle and the quality of product or glass or whatever is obviously inferior. Im no glass expert, but I would assume that it would take a lot more than accumulated dust or grit to scratch a window so deeply as to require replacement. But then again there's obviously a reason they make these kits that you guys are talking about, so it must be a common occurence. I know diamonds are used to cut glass....I don't drive down roads littered with diamond dust, so I would say that is a quality inadequacy issue on GMs part. one of many, but i still love my GP nonetheless.

check out youtube on buffing scratched glass. you need some special buffer...

Nitemare_05GP-same issue here. driver side with real deep scratches. its gotta be cheap glass or something... i just now started seeing real tiny rock chips in my paint. so if the galss is gona scratch before the paint chips from 5 years of driving, theres gotta be a problem

Turtle Wax rubbing compound, the red stuff.

its what I used to fill the scratches then buffed it off. the deeper ones took more time but it was a 6 hour project from start to finish on all the glass.

Can you get a pic of em?

Im not understanding how jst dirt is doing this. have you taken your door panel off and checked inside the door for contact?

If its anything inside your door then something is severely wrong with your door and/or window parts.

It took oer 10 years to wear a scratch into sidewindow glass on some of my older gm's .

you buy the car new or used? carfax checked if used?

i bought it used. two owners. the first was a lady who put the majority of the miles on it. she then traded it in and the second owner was the porter at the dealership. so he just drove it from work to home. it only had 12,000 miles on it when i bought. that very low for being 4 yrs old(at the time)

JUST dirt won't do it, but if a small rock or something gets in there, that's what does it. Seen it on $15,000 Nissans, seen it on $85,000 Audi's.

wouldn't it be safe to say, though, that the rocks or grit would dislodge itself eventually? As often as the window goes up and down? Im not trying to be argumentative here, Joe, this is the first time ive experienced this problem and id like to take care of it before it does any more damage. Im already gonna hafta replace the window, id like to be able to see out of it until then

As an Master Certified Auto Glass Technician with the National Glass Association and having 16 years experience in the business, I can tell you that polishing scratches out of glass is no easy task. Can it be done? Sure. Cerium Oxide mixed with water into a paste is your best bet with a buffing wheel. Jeweler's Rouge is another option. Is it worth it? Not at all. You are going to waste an enormous amount of time even on the smallest scratches. Anything you can feel with your fingernail is going to take forever. The reason it takes so long is because the polish has to be so fine to not corrupt the clarity of the glass. The biggest problem with polishing scratches out of glass, and the reason we don't do it where I work, is that when you polish the scratch out, you have made the glass thinner in that area. This causes a distortion in the glass. Maybe not such a big deal on a side glass, but on a windshield, it's usually enough that it causes things around you to appear wavy. The deeper the scratch, the worse the distortion. Most of the time, looking through the scratch is easier on the eyes than looking through the distortion.

I have to agree with HotRodOlds... just replace the window and clean the belt moldings out while you have the glass out so the new window doesn't immediately look just like the old one.
