Last year I used Mobil 1 in both vehicles (GTO and Jeep) and now only the Jeep gets it. Mobil 1 just isn't as good as it used to be and they are falling in their quality. They do still come factory fill on the Corvettes but I don't think that is going to last much longer. Now I use Penzzoil Ultra (the new stuff) even though it's kind of hard to find and a little pricey (8 quarts for anything is a lot I suppose). I changed the oil at 6k miles with Ultra and it came out looking brand spankin new. This was after driving across the country, driving the car in 115* heat, track days ect.. i know some people don't like their old reputation but oil changes (like Mobil 1) and so do their rankings and qualities. I'd also rock Amsoil, but it's damn near impossible to find.

It's normal for oil to get black, that means it's cleaning your engine. It it doesn't then it's not suspending the the dirt in the oil and it's being deposited in the oil pan. This sludge cannot be picked up by the filter so the oil must contain it until you change it. So the Penzoil Ultra might not be a good choice to use.

I switched from Moble to Valvoline and very happy with it's performance.Plus it's easier to find which is a plus..

I was using royal purple and switched back to mobil 1. I did not notice much differenct between the two. I will either stick with mobil 1 or go the amsoil route.

just an fyi napa oil is valvoline, so if your paying extra for napa oil you could buy valvoline and save money. Thats what ive done ever since the guys at napa told me it was the exact same but in a different jug

I use Amsoil. If I don't feel like putting in an Amsoil order I use Pennzoil. :D

Sorry accidentally double posted.

I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix with approximately 140K miles on it and I'm considering using Mobile 1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic oil. I have never used synthetic in my life and I'm wondering if all the horrors of oil leaking everywhere is true (at least subjectively true).

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

If the seals are dry/worn and there's a lot of dirt sealing the gaps, synthetic oil will wash out the dirt which will cause the oil to leak. I recommend a high mileage synthetic oil since it has seal conditioner that will soften the seals after a while and should stop any leaks.

When I switched my GP with 100+k on it to full synthetic, I ended up with a Head Gasket leak within the 1st oil change. Coincidence or not.. who knows?

I switched with 110k on my motor. Car leaked oil before, car still leaks oil now. If it has gotten worse I think it's more of the blown seals failing even more than the synthetic oil making it leak.

High mileage conventional or synthetic oil will work fine depending on how long you want to go between oil changes.

I've used Valvoline for years and years. Never had any problem. When I have a chance to pull the motor on the 73 and replace the gaskets (that plan is on hold though), I'll be able to switch to full synthetic. I can't take a chance of there still being a cork gasket in there. Synthetic will eat right through that stuff.

I switched to full synthetic at 150ish and there were no leaks of any kind
