Well, folks, once I land my next job, it's time to get a new car. The GTP has some rust starting, and the list of issues is getting a little long now. I need some help deciding on what direction I should go. I know I've always been talking about how I want a BMW or something, but I now realize I have the opportunity to go new instead of used and start leasing. In a few years, I then know I will have the ability to get something else and start moving up from there, as opposed to dealing with market prices, etc. Help me pick something! My main requirements are safety (all these cars are similar in that respect), a decent DRIVER's car (no namby pamby BS), and fuel economy (better than the 12 MPG I get now...). I've narrowed it down to two main options. Let me know what you think.

focus for the same reason matt said lol

plus the focus is an awesome car easpecialy the newer ones actualy a decent handeling car. my parents will be trading in the 99 and the merc next year and proably getting a focus 5 door hatch/wagon

the focus manual is a 6 speed now i think and with 190-200ho they are quick. proably just as fast as a GTP in the 1/4 and they proably can out corner a GTP as well

I drove a Focus today and was impressed by the handling, but not the go pedal. The 6 speed auto is kinda lame, so it's gonna be a stick and will take care of that go pedal problem. :D

How about a WRX or WRX STi Sedan? Or the new 2012 Imprezas are great too!

A little out of my reach at the moment, I think. If I could find one used, that may be a player here, but it's looking like the Focus or the Mini. Besides, the Focus kinda looks like Darth Vader...

Seriously? I see some on ebay going for 19-24K. You just need to look hard enough! It took me a while to find my G8....a long while!

I'm leasing here. That is what kills the BMW option here. I'm much more likely to get a lease (long story how) on a new car than a loan on a used car.

Leasing FTW. I for one will never 'purchase' another car. After these two are gone, it's all lease from here on out.

Get the Ford focus.

I'd rather own than lease/ rent, unless I always had to relocate often.

Never fixing shit on my own again = WIN... I'll see if they'll throw in maintenance...

Reason I wanna lease? Easier to move UP in the car world. My dad does it, and hell, he drives this:

He'll be moving up again soon. Should be interesting to see what he snags next.

So I figure I'll get there one way or another. New, too. New cars are better for insurance.

I cant constantly make payments on something and never own it. To me it seems like a waste of money. If you dont wanna fix stuff on your car, then get a more reliable car. Also you cant even really mod your car cause its not yours you gotta give it back.

Leasing works for those that work locally or don't do alot of miles. Once you go beyond the mileage allowance your screwed...

I used to sell cars including the leasing option...

The way I used to put it to people was like this... Your buying the part of the car your using (usually 60%) on a four yr lease..

It also allows you to get into more car for less money. ;)

Leasing seems to much like renting to me. Sure you get to use it while paying. But in the end when the lease is up and your done paying you have ....... nothing.!

And I see where if you don't have a long drive so miles won't be a big concern then you can get something nicer for about the same money per month. But you still get nothing in the end.

Even tho I just said that i was just thinking the other day it would be cool to lease something like a new vette or cts-v or something. But that is more of a I want to drive something really bad ass and not have to pay out every orifice for it. But again, I would rather buy something used and get to keep it. Or get a good deal on something keep it in great shape, and do that upgrading a little at a time till you have what you want of at least a good down payment. But i don't think I will EVER buy a car brands new. They loose too much too quick.

I did this with my bike but the amount I am loosing ( about half purchase price) is about the same ratio as a car, but at a much lower buy in price.

I never got the point of leasing. Yea you save a bit monthly, but it's never your car. Once the lease is up, that's it, you have nothing to show for all that money you dished out, unless you wanna buy it at special "lease end" pricing (which is never a good idea). So you pay to drive a car that you always have to worry about keeping in nice shape (you still pay for regular maintenance yourself), worry about how many miles you put on it, or pay out the ass when you turn it in.

Hell for a $250/mo payment, you could buy a nice used car at around $10k or so on a 5yr loan. Then you would actually get some money back from it when you decide to upgrade, unlike a lease.

You can lease-to-own, it's actually pretty common. But leasing makes sense if you don't plan on keeping a car long-term (until it's paid off basically).

For $250 a month I had a 12k loan for 4 years. But, I didn't get it paid off by the time I got a different car. When I can afford a brand new car I may lease.. after all they thrown in maintenance now which is awesome.

^ Like she said. I will never buy again because I've had a car payment for 11 years now. I've NEVER gone, since 16, without a car payment. I haven't ever kept a car long enough to pay it off.. If I could lease a new car for 3 years for $500 a month.. I'd be better off in the long run than buying a new car, and trading it in in 4 years, and losing my ass on it.. Look at it this way.. when I was 22, I bought a brand new car for $24,000. I had to take out a $58,000 loan because of all my negative equity from my previous cars... If I would have leased all these years, I wouldn't (right now) owe $22,000 on my truck, that I bought 2 years ago, that I paid $13,000 for.....

Of those two options I would go with the Mini. technically you'd be driving a BMW since they own the Mini brand. :D

Guy I used to work with had a S and autocrossed the shit out of it.

I'm fine without modding anymore. My car is fairly reliable, but the list of things to fix (that I can't, like A/C) just continually grows. Besides, if I like the car still when the lease is over, I can buy it out...
