ok well i feel kind of dumb asking this but before i waste any money i just need a little advice....right now in my garage i have a regular old shelf stereo with 2 speakers....i want moar lol.....i want to put a speaker in each corner and one on the back wall so it would be 5 total speakers....im thinking the receiver i got now will not have enough power for all those speakers so i was thinking about getting a better receiver...not this exact one but something similar

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-STR-DE185- ... 3cc085c112

as far as speakers i was thinking of going with 5 speakers such as these...once again not these exact ones but just to give you an idea of what i am looking at

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RCA-RS2764-300W ... 58919e53e4

would this work or do you suggest i do something else?

You can find a receiver at a pawn shop or a rummage sale for super cheap. Any 5.1 receiver will work out. I have my old Yamaha 5.1 in my garage. As for the speakers.. again, pawn shop or something of that nature. Don't spend too much money on a garage system, unless you work there 40 hours a week. For no new investment at all, I have a 7 speaker 1 subwoofer setup in my garage. I just used what I had laying around.

sounds kind of like good will or salvation army here....not sure where the proceeds go though.

how many watts should i look at for the receiver if say each speaker is "rated" at 150w?

are the speakers i linked to above going to work well with a 5.1 receiver?

I've been thinking of setting up something like this myself, was lookin at DaytonAudio speakers. They have some nice sound and are pretty cheap.

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=300-652 $39 for 6 1/2" woofer 5/8" tweeter. Can get 2 sets for a tad over what that RCA set on ebay cost. Only 40W, but really don't need much more than that for a garage system.

Here's a decent 5.1 system for $199 .. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=300-696

$3.61 for a set of 2. Should work with most speakers.. if not, that's what a drill is for.

Here's a 5.1 setup for only $106 shipped. Reviews say sound quality is good. Could find a used receiver for cheap and have a decent little setup for around $200

Yup, monoprice is the place to go for speaker mounts...

As for wattage of speakers.. it really doesn't matter much. Most bookshelf speakers can handle 100+ watts each.. and most run of the mill basic receivers are going to put out 65-90 watts per channel...

thanks for the links...as for the mounts you linked....will those be able to support shelf speakers like the ones i linked to above?

what size speaker wire should i use since im going to need to add to the existing wire that comes with the speakers?

the reason im looking at the RCA style speakers is because i dont really have any space to put a sub on the floor so the speakers with a built in sub is what works best for my set up...i am now thinking 4 speakers should be plenty with a decent receiver

-- Sat Jan 28, 2012 12:19 pm --

just bought the 2 RCA speakers on ebay that i linked to and have a bid in on this receiver

http://www.ebay.com/itm/150744031320?ss ... 1426.l2649

i think ill be making my own mounts since the ones above wont work for what i got...just goin to get some L brackets and some wood and call it good

L brackets and screw work wonders. Think simple man. Speaker wire - whatever is on sale. I picked up 500 feet of 16 gauge from radio shack on sale for like 20 bucks, so it's what I use for all home and garage applications.

The ebay speakers are amplified so they aren't a good choice for a 5.1 system. The monoprice 5.1 speakers are an excellent choice since they have 4 small speakers that will be easy to mount, plus a 60 watt powered subwoofer you can put anywhere since bass non directional. The Pioneer receiver will work well with that 5.1 speaker setup but I don't recommend using the amplified speakers with an amplified output.

If you read the description each speaker enclosure has 1 wire for the main speakers and 1 wire for the subwoofer. So there's no way to connect 4 speaker outputs on the receiver to a total of 2 speaker wires on both speakers, and 1 subwoofer output on the receiver to a total of 2 subwoofer wires on both speakers.

You can connect each speaker to the 2 speaker outputs on each channel of the receiver, but you won't get any bass since the receiver processes bass through the single subwoofer channel. The RCA receiver that these speakers came with processed sound differently than a normal 5.1 receiver does so they won't be compatible.

To use the RCA amplified speakers you will need a 2 channel receiver not a 5.1 receiver.

Yes it would but 4 channel receivers are hard to find. Plus I would think it's easier to find a spot for 4 small speakers and a subwoofer than 4 large speakers. Since bass is non directional you can put the subwoofer in the attic and it will resonate throught the wood frame of the garage.

If I were you I'd buy the 5.1 receiver and 5.1 speakers from monoprice and sell the RCA amplified speakers. If you don't want to do that you can cancel the bid on the 5.1 receiver and bid on a 2 channel receiver.

As far as I know they don't make a 5 channel receiver.

The speakers you bought will work with the receiver. The actual speakers are not amplified as the ad suggests, or there would be a 110v plug attached to each. Just take the + and - from each speaker (2 per speaker) and put them together and plug them into the receiver side by side. The larger speaker will give you some bass, but not act as a true subwoofer. As far as impedance, I wouldn't worry about it as it's just a garage setup and isn't run constantly, so you shouldn't have any problems....

SO.. + and + from speaker 1 go together and - and - from speaker 1, go together, and plug into Front Speaker A set Left - and + You will end up with a 4 ohm load, but that will be fine. My receiver in the garage is rated for 8ohm, and I'm running less than 1 :)

Casper is right the speakers aren't amplified, but each speaker has 4 wires coming out of it, not 2. There's two + wires and two - wires so you'll have to double the wires together on the receiver speaker outputs. That will work with a 2 channel receiver but it's not a good way to make speaker connections because of the difference in ohm ratings. Those RCA speakers are intended for an RCA receiver and not a standard 2 channel receiver.

And yes a 2 channel receiver is the best way to go.

That'll work but you won't get much sound volume since the 80 watts per channel will be split in half to drive the speakers & subwoofer in each speaker. You really should just sell those RCA speakers since they have bastardized connections and get a full 5.1 system. You would be much happier with that setup.
