lol....instead of putting the front and rear speakers on the front and back wall in the corner i was going to throw them on the side walls but still keep them close to the corners so i can have 180* of rotation vs. 90* if that makes sense

On the side walls in each corner will work.

what gauge speaker wire should i go with? the longest distance will be about 30 feet or so...does brand matter or anything i should look for in the wire itself?

I just use standard speaker wire. You might notice slight difference with expensive wire but I don't feel it's worth the cost.

You think I should do 14 or 16 gauge?

14 is thicker than 16 so that's a better choice.

Just finished up installing a new sound system in our shop. We used my aftermarket stereo that i had in the for sale section. Mounted it in a box, then ran all new wires to 4 speakers i used to have in my room. Bumps pretty good. And if i get my sub fixed and dont want it in my car we will wire that up too.

You guys are wayyy overthinking this. It's for a garage... A cell phone, with pandora, hooked up to a imusic dock would work just fine..

The layout posted at the top of this page is the one I'd go for; just like a home cinema sound setup.

I like to feel the music not just hear it. ;-)

Well you should have given a better example than an iPod and some little speakers then.

ok so here is my final question since i am trying to figure out how much wire im going to need...if i put the garage door up and the speakers are in the corner i am afraid they will block some of the sound so should i put them where the brace is on this picture or will i not notice a difference

Just put them below the door when it's open. You want them close to ear level anyway, not up near the ceiling.

So how does it sound, nice & clean? You shouldn't put that other stereo on top of the receiver, it blocks the vents and it can overheat.

That's cool I'm glad you like the sound of the new system. I have 2 Onkyo receivers and never had any trouble with either one. That's the only receiver I'll ever buy if I have to replace them in the future.

DIY boxes with leftover car speakers. Mine are powered with an old 1976 Pioneer SX-450 analog receiver. Makes more bass than my newer stuff without a subwoofer...

Uhhhh you have 2 subwoofers there so it should make more bass than a single subwoofer. It's fine for music which is stereo, but doesn't work at all for anything that requires 5.1 surround. Plus some people don't have room for 2 large speakers so a 5.1 system is the only option for them. I have an older Pioneer receiver with 2 large speakers and it gets loud but doesn't sound nowhere near as clear as my Onkyo recievers do with 5.1 speakers.

2 subwoofers? You talking about my photo of a 6.5" door speaker leftover from my Wife's Subaru? What I was getting at was that old analog receivers with linear power supplies make more bass than today's digital amplifiers if you turn off the active subwoofer.
