I was driving behind a late 90's Stang and the sound is so awesome compared to what I hear from my GXP. I know that it is stock for a Stang and want to know why we can't sound like that. Is it just some new muffs required? I can kind of hear a similar low exhaust note from my car but it is just much quieter.

I have heard some posts from people who have changed their muffs and it is not the same as listening in person. We have a 5.3L which should be similar to the Mustang in size, so why can't the thing roar!

Most of the Mustangs around here are running H or X pipes with out cats. So in order to get close to their sound best bet would be to get the electric cut out. But then again you can always tell when you here a Mustang coming. Like they have a unique sound. Im pretty happy with the sound with my Magnaflows.

Mustangs sounds are unique. u the fact that its RWD and allow for the X or H pipes, plus the the SOHC/DOHC cam config adds to the sound that the cars make.

You can make these cars sound more like a LS1 or LS6

So for those guys running Magnaflows or flowmasters, is the sound the same as stock only louder? I think I would be good with that. I think the stock exhaust note is nice just too quiet. How much louder would we be talking? Could I leave the resonator in or would it be best to remove it. I'm not looking for increased performance just sound.

These cars are so rare that I can't meet up with someone who has had their muffs changed to hear for myself and determine if I want magnaflow or flowmasters etc. Perhaps my car is actually louder than I think. I haven't had my Wife drive it away to hear from behind. I suspect it would be much louder behind the car because I know her old GT can hardly be heard inside the car but from behind it is quite noticeable.

For me I think it made the exhaust note deeper, and it definitely made it louder. Where are you located at?

The only thing about remove the resonator is the fact in 4 cyl mode would be extra drone. I put a cut out on after the resonator and its louder but really not that loud at all. Sounds alot better thought.

No resonator, no catalytic converter, and an electric cutout

And the only thing you can make sound like a Mustang is a Mustang.

Also, I have DoD tuned out.

Very nice exhaust on that GXP. I never got sick of the stock exhaust on my MCSS. (compared to the 3.8 NA I was used to before)

I wish my car could sound more like my mom's Camaro SS with SLP centermount exhaust. See video of cars starting up and idling here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyyQGa2efTY

My GXP is stock, as is the Z28. The SS has a few factory options via SLP, important to this is the 345 hp package with center mount exhaust. My GXP sounds similar in the video to the SS, but the reality is that the SS is at least 2 or 3 times louder than the GXP.

Let's look on the bright side. Our stock GXPs sound better than the stock G8 GT's exhaust.

Good point. The G8 is too quiet. I may have exaggerated a bit. I've never actually heard my car from outside. I heard some clips on youtube and it sounds pretty darn good and even better with some muffs.

I think I will be plenty happy with some new muffs. I"ll likely keep the resonator for now since I want to spend as little as possible.

Which muffs to get.....

Bob -

Mustangs have shorter pipe lengths which give them that wail. Our cars are just longer = lower.

My '08 GXP had the Magnaflow Cat-back on it when I bought it & it droned soo badly I switched out the mufflers out to DynoMax 2.25". That didn't work either, so after reading a spec sheet on the LS4 where it stated: "Because the vibration and acoustic dynamics of the V-8 and V-4 modes are different, the exhaust system of DOD (Displacement on Demand) equipped vehicles is tuned to compensate for the changes." - I finally resorted to ordering a complete new GM exhaust online from Charles Clark Chev (Resonator, pipes, mufflers & tips - it comes fully assembled - 1 Piece).

Maybe GM has a new muffler vendor making these now, because the car is smooth, quiet when driving normal, but has a nasty growl when you get on it. It really sounds good. Lots of people knock it, but the factory exhaust is 2.5", Stainless Steel, mandrel bent.

I kind of like driving a sleeper anyway. It's always great to see the expression on someone's face when they get smoked by a car they don't give a second look at.
