I drove yet another GXP the other day, and I have come to the conclusion I'm really not so crazy about TapShift. I love virtually everything else about the car but the placement of the paddles just doesnt feel very ergonomic to me (maybe I got short thumbs)

My question would be could the shifter be replaced with a standard 1-2-3-D type (say from a GT) and bypass the TapShift feature?
I know on Morad's website he lists TapShift trans as different from ones in Montes and Impalas equipped with the LS4, but is this just an electronic feature or is there a different valve body that precludes the use of a regular shifter?

It would not be worth it just to remove the tapshift. You could just not use it if you don't like it.

Yes, I believe the valve body is different with tapshift. There is a seperate valve body in the tranny just for tapshift.

The only downside to that is the shifter only goes down to "M"...so any manual gear selection is moot. I've also never understood why designers in the US have gone the route of paddles that handle both up and down shift duties. Most other marques that use paddles have upshift on one side and downshift on the other...which I feel is a better system. I think this would have eventually changed with GM but now Pontiac will never benefit from it...and that's too bad.

personally i think those little shift paddles are retarded any way i think it should be an autostick style like the new CTS or lots of chryslers have.

If you need to manually shift down in gears then use the paddles. As far as the answer to your question, transmissions with tapshift have different valve bodies, channel plates, and internal range selectors. I had to swap those three parts to make a non tapshift trans work in my comp G when I swapped trannies.

So a tranny from an Impala, Monte or LaCrosse Super would swap in...and then use a standard shifter?

I wouldnt really mind the paddles so bad if they were placed better. The ones in the New Malibu (or last year of G6) were much better designed. I guess its just an old school thing to like using the shifter instead.

Yes, but then you run the issue of it possibly throwing a code and not driving correctly because your PCM/BCM may get confused as to what range the trans is in. If you like the ones in the malibu's or the G6, why don't you save yourself a TON of headache and get a steering wheel with paddles for that from one of those cars and do some wiring to make it work?

Not really worth it if you ask me..

Like milestone said, just don't use it.

Unless there is some reason you need 1,2,3?

I have also read that the differential is different on the hd version. The passenger side axle is shorter with the hd dif.
