Being a newbie to owning a car with a tapshift, what do you personally use it for?

So far, from my experiences using it, I only use it when the transmission temperature is over about 120, and stop using it when it gets close to 200. It seems like it raises the temperature quite a bit when you use it, so I put it back into D when it gets hot. If I remember correctly, 210 is the highest operating temperature the owner's manual says is normal, and 180 is the lower operating temp.

I haven't found it particularly useful for performance driving, because it becomes just sort of a hassle to have to watch the RPM. Anybody agree, disagree?

I've been using it mostly to attempt to improve my fuel mileage when I'm not in very much traffic or around busy intersections. I shift into 3rd when I'm in school zones going 20 and leave it there so the transmission doesn't downshift and decrease my fuel mileage and ability to coast, and when going 30, I do the same with 4th gear so I can coast for a long time without giving any gas.

The only thing I don't like about using it is that downshifts don't blip the throttle so you can hear the downshift.

What do you think of it or use it for?

the only thing i use it for is downshifting. its useless for racing. it sounds awesome when you have an exhaust and downshift.

I use it to pass people so i know its already in the right gear. Like on a 2 lane road before i pass i put into manual mode and drop it into second. Like using it to dwon shift. Havent used it to race yet. Gonna try it at the track this summer. And also to force into a higher gear sometims for fuelmilage

if i am in the mood to use it i will put it in a higher gear to save on gas. when we had snow i would downshift when coming up to stop sign or slowing down. other then that my car usually sits in D.

I soooooo wish our car had a way to turn off overdrive without the tap-shift.

I really thought I would love it, and maybe for spirited driving in curves or hills maybe great....but my experience with straight line use I hit the revlimiter so quick that what ever gains you get by holding the gear is offset by the limiter.

MAYBE if we had RPM's in the HUD.........

Thats were u play with it till you know what RPM match what gears. For example 55/56 Mph is redline in first. SO When u see 49/50mph or so upshift. This works for me but im at altitude(5280 mile high Denver) so my car doesnt pull as hard as you other GXPer will at lower elevations. So u might need to upshift around 47mph depending on your car, if u have modifed redline and how different the cars run at lower elevation. Second Gear is good up to 100+mph or so dont rember exactally. i think its 105. basically i shift 5mph before redline, that seems to give you enough reaction time to make the shift and for the car to shift without hitting redline.

Oh and 3rd gear goes to 160mph in my car. Found out onthe Dyno :)

I love the sound of a 3-2 downshift at 50mph. Other than that, I use it to hold a gear when merging/passing on the freeway.

That's really interesting information. Without the GP GXP being in Gran Turismo 4, I didn't know what the top speed in each gear was.

I use the Tap Shift for Raceing and it seemes to work very well, but like Panther was saying you do need to shift a bit before the actuall redline. Ohh and back to the trans heating up, im on my second trans and i only have 58,000, My trans when raceing will heat up on average to 110 113 but sometimes up to 220,223, trans fluid starts to burn in the high 220's range i think, so that is really lame, GM should have not been soo stupid and just put a larger trans cooler in insted of the one built in with the radiator. Ohh and my car goes up to about 145 in third btw

the gxp stock were limited to the 145mph range. When i was on the dyno it was disable to get a full 3rd gear pull. And after words he raised it to 190mph so basically mine top speed is disabled. For Track use only of course lol

I use tapshift when drag racing to hold second gear through the traps. It's a lot better to use D until after the car shifts into 2nd, then shift to M and hold 2nd. I've found that otherwise the car wants to shift to third just before the 1/4 trap, and so the computer reduces power right at the end. I'll hit the rev limiter in 2nd right at the 1/4. Just ran a 13.80@101 yesterday using this method (I have a magnaflow cat-back and K&N intake)

I noticed if i hold it to redline in second to goes to 102. If i leave it in drive and it does the 2-3 shift it shifted at 92/93. Sucks how it short shift on us.

Gee nice time Paul, that's pretty quick! I'm not a racer, and probably never will be, but it's good to hear what all of the racers are doing. I just knew it would do 40 in 1st.

Sounds like you're geared tall like the L67. The top of 3rd for me is around 160, though I've not quite been that fast. I've made 147 is all.

At my altitude trying to get top speed is a B@#!#@. Took a long time to hit 140+. My old Turbo Audi was much quicker up to.
Need more HP

I use it for passing and downshifting to ease the use of brakes a bit.

I like to use it when Im coming off the highway at like 70. Downshifting and slowing the car with the DS. Also when WOT I switch to Manual after 2nd gear seems to work the best IMO.
