Having gone about 4,000 miles on my GXP with 46% oil life remaining, I got the message "low oil" on the DIC. I checked, and sure enough it was below the level it should be at on the dip stick.

I went and bought a quart, filled it up that night, and all was good. Made it home the 350 miles without issue and still don't have an issue.

Just wondering though... do these engines USE oil? And if so... why? Is it when they go into 4 cylinder mode?

I've never had a car that used oil, and wasn't leaking any. But, on that same note, I have never gone 4,000 miles without an oil change.

I have wondered if some of the oil loss/use issue is related to the DOD/AFM

Well it is an LS engine, and LS engines have been known to burn oil.

Really? Didn't know that. My mom's SS is driven fewer than 3,000 miles a year, so she just gets basically yearly oil changes. Most of the time she has only gone just over 1,000 miles, so we wouldn't know if it was burning oil.

Guess I'll just keep a quart in the trunk of the GXP.

When do you guys get your oil changed? I was going to wait until approximately 30% oil life remaining.

Early LS1's are know for burning oil. The issues was fixed in 01. Some guys stil say they burn oil in there later generation LS1's. My 02 camaro SS does not burn oil either. I have not noticed, but I rarely drive the car. Keep an eye on it and make sure you do not have an oil leak anywhere.

Changing your oil at 30% is fine. But also keep an eye on the mileage. The DIC is not that accurate.

Engines burn oil by nature. Some more than others. How far down were you? A quart in 4000 miles is more than acceptable.

Mine burns oil also. It seems to be common for it to use quart between changes.

It seems to be 50/50 that use oil or dont. A qrt ever 4k miles semms normal. Personally i dont have oil consumption issues yet. 30K miles.

Definitely no leak whatsoever. I just went over 30,000 miles so the car is still new.

When the message came up, I was below the cross-hatched area on the dip stick. After adding a quart that night, I am now at the bottom 1/3 or perhaps 1/4 of the cross hatched area.

It makes me remember one of my best friends who had a Mini Cooper S. He told me the German engineering was so good and all that, and that the dealership wouldn't allow the free oil change service unless the oil change light came on. "The light will tell me when the oil is dirty, and the owners manual says to have it changed around 12,000 miles." That's right. 12,000 miles if I remember what he said correctly. I called BS on that multiple times to no avail. What ended up happening is around 14,000 miles his engine went CLUNK and seized up as there wasn't enough oil to keep it running. BMW gave him an entirely new engine on warranty. Silly BMW.

I had never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life as 14,000 miles on the same oil, on a car that was purchased brand new with only about 100 miles on it. He never added any oil, or checked his oil. For all I know, it was one of those cars that doesn't even come with an oil dipstick LOL.

I've been doing a LOT of highway mileage on long trips. 300 miles in a 7 hour drive for example. I've made 4 or 5 of those this year I believe. 300*2 = 600*4 = 2400 or 600*5 = 3000, so that many miles has been the portion of my ~3200 to 3800 miles I have put on the car since buying it.

If you don't do much highway mileage, perhaps you won't use as much. Maybe it's a sign that you need to check your dipstick now that we're talking about it! lol

Yeah...I would NEVER run that long without changing it, much less checking it. VW recommends 5000 mile oil change intervals, and specs 900 miles to a quart is OK. The capacity is 4.5 quarts. You do the math.

I would say your oil consumption is plenty acceptable. Figure you lost a quart and a quarter or so.

That's about normal...about what I would expect. My Volvo uses about a quart and a half every oil change, which is about 5000 miles. I change the filter at 2500, and then top it off from there to finish up the 5000 miles.

Finally people who understand the workings of an engine ^^^

If your engine doesn't use ANY oil, something is wrong. That means it's not lubricating the cylinders enought, and therefore not burning any off, which can mean problems.

Burning a little oil ( 1 quart per oil change ) = Good lubrication.

I'm just gonna ignore everything that's been posted before this and say I would hope that all GXP's use some type of oil.

I didn't read through all the posts. but as someone else said it's an LSx motor, yes it's going to eat oil.

and don't follow the DIC for oil changes. go every 3k for regular and 5k (if you want) for synthetic. or else it's going to be bad news bears for your car.

seems normal. and lol at a buddy of mine when i told him my caddy burns oil, he said so you gota check your oil between oil changes. i told him the manual even says it he lol. i told him buy a porsche and the manual will say the same lol. point blank most high performance engines are designed to burn oil, check the honing of the cyclinder walls and thats all the proof 4 me to see

Yea same here. I go through about a quart every 3k or so. I was actually somewhat nervous over my first oil change. I previously had a 05 CompG and it didn't burn anything. So when I saw my GXP eating a quart I was like    But after hearing that it is just an LS trait I feel much better about my Black Beauty. Thanks for clearing that up guys!!!
