I received a letter the other day from Pontiac in regard to my '06 GXP and it states that Pontiac will take care of a power steering problem free of charge up until February 2011. Did everyone receive their letter? If not, I can scan it and post it.

I didn't get one. Is it only for the 2006 model year?

I rec'd mine a few months ago and had it completed. It's not a quick process so plan on leaving the car at the dealership for several hours.

Question for you guys. I have a friend who is having serious issues with his GXP but they replaced the power steering pump already. Could this still be the cause of the issue? Something else in power steering?

I had an issue with the steering rack a year or 2 ago. Nothing major but it had some play in it. What kind of issue is he having???

Sorry, I forgot to check this topic til now. You don't need the letter to get the recall fixed. Just call them and ask about the power steering leak recall.

My car has been with them since 1pm yesterday. They called me awhile ago to say they have to order some new parts (wonder what they messed up...?) so I won't be getting the car back til tomorrow. Hopefully they don't try to bill me for anything. That's the reason I purchased the $2000 extended warranty from them when I bought the car last January...

They gave me a Pontiac Vibe GT with the 2.4L engine as a loaner yesterday... It's so slow... But the manual shifting mode is a lot more fun than on the GXP, mostly because it's a 5 speed auto and you can use the first 3 gears from stoplight to stoplight. 158 hp sure isn't much. The gas pedal is tricky too. You barely touch it and the car leaps forward like a scared squirrel. If you floor it, it takes about 2 seconds for an unimpressive WHIRRRRRRRRR sound to form and it certainly isn't quick. According to autos.msn.com it's 158 hp @ 6000 RPM and 162 lb ft @ 4000 RPM. Feels more like 300 lb ft @ 1000 RPM and 100 lb ft at anything higher! Oh well, it's kind of fun now that I'm used to it. Nice of them to give me a loaner.

-- Wed May 19, 2010 4:27 pm --

Got the car back and the steering feels much more solid. Before it felt like chewing gum or a rubber band (stretchy). Now it feels pretty solid, like the wheels are actually connected to the steering wheel.

I had my service manager print out exactly what was done to the car. It only affects '05-'06 GXPs and some Impalas and Monte Carlos. If someone knows the owner of this site or one of the other big GP sites, tell them about these pics I'm posting. I'll host them a little while, but don't want them taking up space on my photobucket for eternity. As long as there's something says "images thanks to Brangeta of http://www.brangeta.com" (might as well get a free plug for my business thanks to going through this effort) I don't care who steals them and posts them where. I'm sure after February 2011 (when this recall period expires), there will be some people who still haven't gotten it taken care of.

For some reason, I only have 15 out of 16 pages, but I doubt the last page was of much value.

I never got the letter, though found out about it when I had to take my GXP in to have the transmission rebuilt at 45K miles in my 06. Got lucky, it was out of warranty, but for some reason GM picked up all but $300 of the repair, something like $4000 otherwise.

-- Mon Jul 19, 2010 11:16 pm --

on a side note to that last post....since the recall work was done, the mysterious grinding in my steering is magically gone, which previously has had not 1 rack n pinion replacement but 2

I got my letter a few months ago, but I'll probably get it done at the last minute. I hate dealers.

You might want to get this done sooner rather than later. I read on one of the GP forums what happens to the line they're replacing. Some just start leaking, others split open randomly and spray PS fluid on the exaust. On the fourum I read this on (can't remember which) 2 members had watched their cars burn to the ground on the side of the road.

Thanks for putting this post out here. I just bought my GXP in October 2010. I should have checked for recalls but did not do this right away. Sure enough when it got real cold here in Pittsburgh, my power steering fluid poured out of my car Tuesday night in my driveway. I had to have it towed to the dealer. They started working on it today but ran into a snag when a part they needed did not show up today. I expect to have the car finished on Monday 12/13/10.

Has anyone out of their 3 year warranty had this recall done? Was you vehicle towed? Will GM pay for the tow to the nearest GM dealer? I got stuck paying for the tow truck. It was not my fault they put an inferior hose on these cars. Who can I call at Pontiac or GM to get some restitution for the tow fees. I tried the Pontiac Roadside service number on our windows, but they told me I was out of the 3 year warranty and they would not arrange a tow at no cost.
