Would you purchase a quality fenderwell intake for under 150 dollars?

Ok guys, I'm sure many of you are sitting there and day after day looking at the K&N and Cold Air Inductions intakes and drooling, knowing that you won't pay that much for one like, LIKE ME. I'm going the distance to try and build a HIGH quality fenderwell intake for our cars without breaking the bank. Also to make a ram-air headlight for track use. I have had the 3.25" to 3" coupler for a few weeks. I have also had the RE-0930 K&N filter for a few weeks. I have merely been waiting on my pipe to come in. I bought 5' of T-304 stainless thinwall pipe. For those of you who know, this is surgical grade stainless and is the most resistant to oxidation. So I'm going to pick up the pipe and cut a piece and test fit this thing today. Later on I'm going to have the pipe powdercoated red along with my diagonal braces and radiator motor mount bracket to match my black and red engine cover. As soon as I get this thing done I will take some pictures and get them up here so everybody can see. BTW, I'm thinking about making this a kit that I can ship out to you with instructions if this works out well. We'll see how it goes. With the kit you will also have the ability to pick the pipe powdercoat color or have it without coat. Anyways, I will get pics up here as soon as I get it done. I'm guessing around 6ish. Wish me luck.

Ok, here we go, I just have it set up as a CAI right now because I took the airbox out and I'm going to have to have a 90 degree bend in the pipe to get into the fenderwell behind the front driving lights near the air dam opening. The only part that gets hot is the rubber connector from the TB to the MAF so I think i'm gonna buy another silicone coupler to span that so that it blocks out all that heat :) I'll get more pics on when I can get them to upload. I love the sound this thing makes.

Hey Somthing i did. with mine for ahwile was very similar to this. However i just left the top of the factory air box on as well, and just pulled off the rear piece and stuck the Air Filter inside the box. I had a round trueFlow foam filte. Also i found a sticky on another site of a guy that built a Cold air box from lexan for like $80us.. Used 1/4 thick lexan and just drilled them together. I always that your couls router outa grove then glue it up. but the screws dont look to bad.

awesome, thanks for the advice, I'm going to start off by replacing the TB to MAF coupler with a good silicone one :) All of the heat that soaks the intake air comes from that. From there, I've thought about modifying the stock airbox to make a heatshield but I can't make the filter fit in the box, it's too big, I tried ;) More work to do. Maybe I'll get to it this weekend.

I think use a 90 degree elbow to center the air filter with in stock lower air box. then build a shield with the lexan.

Here is the the link. He made a full Lexan box.

http://www.grandprixforums.net/custom_cai.php

You could tint the lexan, add that silver coated bubble wrap insulation. the high temp Aluminum tape all kinda of simple ideas.

Ok guys, it's update time. After a week off from messing with it. I'm back onto the FWI kick. Instead of getting the pipe bent, I'm going a different direction. I bought another silicone coupler, this one 90 degree to get down into the front bumper. I'm just going to cut another piece of pipe. I will update when I get this step done. I also thought about the problem with the TB to MAF coupler. I am going to overcome this by wrapping it with fiberglass exhaust wrap and clamping it down with the stainless wireties. This will allow me to cut a hole for the oil breather and it will still look good. That stuff should solve that problem and therefore I'll be pulling cold air up and it won't be heated before it hits the TB :)

The pipe is getting cut today. As long as I have some time while my son is napping, it will be finished today. Dunno if I'll get it all wrapped with the header wrap though, but that is the goal. I had to mod the bottom part of the stock airbox yesterday to make this work, but oh well, it's gonna turn out great.

K, had the son all day yesterday, didn't get around to it. I have all day today after I get off work so pics are on their way. I should be able to get the whole thing completed and wrapped. :)

Ok, pics guys. I'm gonna wrap the header wrap with the heat foil so it doesn't look so bad, right now it's more functional than it is beautiful :)

And yes, I'm going to be getting a new reverse light assembly and tint it.

You'll be getting cold air for sure. Are you worried about water/dirt from that open of an area? It might get dirty real quick. Maybe a K&N drycharger would help? Very nice job though.

Your car look like it is hurt from white wrap as "hard cast" on it lol

I never seen one engine mount & dog bone instead usually 2 of them. I guess it might be gxp thing.

I hope your filter cone don't get rusty. This guy from 97-03 model have fender intake. He doesn't take care of it so it has been there few years. Now, he finally take it out and found this rusty air cone.

See this thread.

JC05GXP, I have a hydrolock filter cover on the way for that ;)

Streetshaker, The wrap definitely isn't unnecessary man. I checked the temp of the components after about 10 minutes of driving on a warm day and everything was steaming hot. This way I'm eliminating heatsoak and keeping the MAF cool so I get good readings and good continued horsepower even on the hottest of days :)

palsut, It's a good K&N filter but I plan on keeping an eye on it to make sure it doesn't rust. Thanks for the heads up on that though. It also perplexes me that there is only one top mount on a v8 and two on the v6 :) the MSP v.2 motor mount definitely changes the driving experience, acceleration is much more noticeable.
