I have a 2006 GXP with about 56,000 miles on it. My check engine light came on so I took it to my local GM dealer. I paid my $70.00 so they could put it on there computer to find out what was wrong.

This is what my print out says: "DTC P0455 EVAP LEAK DETECTED. PERFORM CIRCUIT TEST. VENT SOLENOID HAS INTERNAL FAILURE WILL NOT CYCLE IN RESPONSE TO THE COMMAND GIVEN TO THE SOLENOID. PROVIDED ESTIMATE OF REPAIRS TO CUSTOMER---$225.00 CUSTOMER HAS DECLINED REPAIRS AT THIS TIME"

My question is this something I can do myself ?? If so, can someone walk me throught this procedure with the part number, and where it is located, and how much it would cost. Oh, and the guy that performed the test told me if he were I, he would forget it and ignore the check engine light, what is wrong, is no big deal ???????????????

Any help that I could receive would be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you
Arnie

It's located just under the gas cap/filler tube. I found it on this site's service manual.http://sm.gpona.com:9001/si/showDoc.do? ... lId=134630 Doesnt look hard to change. Look under 5.3L engine controls.

Next time, don't go to the dealer. $70.

Autozone should be able to read your codes for free!

And yes, the service manual is there for you to use!

You can also get a bluetooth code reader/eraser off of ebay for like 25 bucks. I got one and i love it it can tell you a lot of things about your car.

Evap Emissions usually has something to do with gasoline vapor. Your car is probably smelling like gas when it is parked after driving.

First, Thanks to all the people that have answered my post. This has helped me out immensely. This web page is very informative everyone seems to know what they are talking about, no BS.
I will be replacing this sensor myself.
One other thing, on resetting the computer, do I just remove neg on the battery post for one minute??

Thanks for all the help
Arnie

The light should go out by itself.

WOW. I must give thanks for that info as well because I was just about to take my car in for that same problem but now I think I'll handle it myself.

I take these out at work all the time to repair a frame rail or put in a trunk floor. The light usually goes out by itself on domestics, but has to be turned off on foreigns. It may take a few key cycles of proper operation before the light will turn off by itself. The code will remain in the computer after the light goes out, just for future reference. Have fun repairing your car urself, and saving a ton of money. I would buy a cheapo scan tool from ebay that does CAN Protocol. Can be had for under 100 bucks. Spend a little more and get one that does abs also. Wheel bearings are a common problem on these cars, and sets off the abs/stability warning on the DIC. The scan tool will tell you which wheel is bad.

A scan tool or a visit to autozone would tell you that the car has an evap leak, I takes a real mechnic to find where the problem is, autozone would of sold you a fuel cap and send you on your way, the light would of come back in a day or 2. If you look at your service manual you will see the tree of tests the tech had to do to come to the conclution, imho its $70.00 well spent

Not too hard to figure out actually. The gas cap defect is a large leak and comes up on the DIC. Most other leaks are small and are linked to a code.

Any good scanner suggestions? I've been putting off fixing my abs/tc issue for about a month now, would be nice to know which wheel it is so I can try and figure it out myself before the dealer rips me off.

Check on ebay or amazon. I have an Actron that still works good. Make sure it does CAN protocol(most new ones do.) Also make sure it does abs.

I have had this code twice now. Replacing the gas cap and solenoid did not fix it. I still have my extended warranty so the dealer did all the work for nothing. The first time the replaced the solenoid and it did not fix it. after two hours of t/s it turned out to be a short in a wire under the rear seat. One year later the light came back. After replacing the solenoid again, and not fixing it, they said it was a short in the ECM. So they replaced the ECM. Good thing I had swapped out my tuned one. The issue appeared after I put the stock one back in earlier that month.

Good story. I had a Bonneville with a EGR code. I replaced the valve and all was well for about a month. The same code popped back up. I thought...hmmm...that EGR valve was expensive, Iam not putting another one in! I put in a used ecm from a junkyard and all was well. I took the old one apart, turns out a little sliver of aluminum was shorting out the circuit board on the ecm.
