So earlier this year I bought a set of gxp rims for a real good price. They were only on the car for a little bit and they look brand new. They are the Alcoa rims. I've been looking around and the other rims the people refer to as non alcoa, look different but I've never seen them up close. How much different are they? What are the main differences? Does anyone have up close pictures they can post?

I was a lil late I guess, but:

Image
Alcoa

Image
Non-Alcoa

^you cant see very well, but the non-Alcoa clearly dont have the rivets around the spokes like the Alcoa-style do

So the alcoa have a little thinner of a spoke. I knew they looked different.

^^^ Those second ones are technically "Non-Alcoa" but not GXP rims. they are Millie Miglia's or KV5's or something aftermarket. They have the thinner spokes of the Alcoa, and are missing the rivets like the GM Non-Alcoa's, but have a smaller offset as well. Great rims though.

The GM spec sheet lists 18" forged aluminum wheels as standard equipment for GXP's, so regardless who made 'em, the wheels are great.

The fasteners in the "Alcoa" rims look like they are just for show. Looking at the wheel, it doesn't look like they really hold anything together. They look cool though. GM probably save a few $$ withe the later design.

It all depends on the state you live in and if you drive it in the winter.

Well no problems since I got it but they came with some curb rash and lots of brake dust on the front rims(retired rent a car)... thus why I cant wait for my KV5's.

Good point Ryan, I didnt think about that. Damn, that salt shit really causes all kindsa problems, huh? Same for some of the CompG guys, their chrome wheels have been known to peel also.....I feel bad for you Northerners who have to tolerate that stuff

Thats why a lot of us have summer and winter rims. At the first sign of snow fall I take them off.

Wow, I didn't know the wheels were different on the 07-08, I just thought the center cap changed to silver. I like my 06 Alcoa wheels a LOT better than the other ones. Is it unusual that my wheels are chrome? I thought all GXPs came with chrome, but Fieldysdreams's wheels look silver painted.

The rivets ARE just for show as caudanac speculated. They are plastic, and I'm actually missing one on one of my wheels. They serve no purpose other than looking neat. Anybody have a spare one...? Nobody pays attention to my car at car shows, but I wouldn't mind having the missing rivet to put in the hole.
