I just landed a used Superchips hand held tuner on Ebay for $200, and they normally go for over $400. It allows you to tune the G8 GT to run better on premium gas and remove the transmission torque management in various amounts. It can be set from stock to chirp the tires firm and you can also remove the AFM too.

Another nice feature is you can return the car to the stock settings for dealer visits. It doesn't have the all the options like an HP Tuner, but I won't have to spend weeks or months learning how to use it. It's easy to update it from their website thru the USB cable hooked to any computer when they make new changes. I'll let you all know how I like it once I get it and try it out.

It saves the stock tune inside, and you can reload it back and forth as many times as you want.

As stated the dealer won't know since the tuner backs up the original tune that can be reflashed at anytime. Did you get it in yet? Curious to hear what you think about it.

Yeah I got it and the seller didn't put the stock tune back in their vehicle, so now it's locked to their VIN. Superchips wants $100 to unlock it, and I'm surely not paying to have that done. So the seller is trying to figure out a solution to this matter.....

That sucks. Hopefully it works out.

Oh it will, either they will pay to have it unlocked or I'll get my $200 back. If I was the one selling the tuner, I'd rather have $100 in my pocket than nothing at all. So if they have any smarts they will just pay to get it unlocked.

The seller emailed me today and said the tuner was ready to be unlocked. So I plugged it in to my computer and ran the updating program. Now the tuner says it hasn't been used, so it looks like I'm good to go. WOOHOO!

After the tune:
OMG this tuner is amazing, it seems like a different car now. I took off in manual mode, hit 2nd gear and the car took off like rocket! It shifts like a fully manual trans without the clutch, all the shifts are firm & quick, with no lag at all like before. And at light throttle pressure it shifts nice & smooth just like stock.

I set the shift torque management at 50% above stock (It goes all the way up to 200%) and I couldn't imagine what it would be like any higher. I think the front wheels would come off the ground, lol. I also removed the AFM (cylinder deactivation) and the car feels so much better when cruising in auto mode. Sport shift holds the gears longer now, and selects the right gear when entering & exiting the corners to keep the motor in the powerband. It seems to have more power too, the rear wheels were struggling to get traction most of the time at anything over half throttle. I highly recommend the Superchips tuner, it turns the G8 into a wild animal!

The tuner is over $400 new but I got it preowned for $200 on Ebay. Most of the mail order canned tunes are around $500 and you're stuck with that tune unless you want to send it back to have it updated for a fee. The cool thing about this tuner is it saves the stock tune, so I can load it back in 5 minutes for any warranty visits to the dealer. Then I just swap the performance tune back when I get home.

I never felt this much of a difference with the DHP or Overkill PCM in my Grand Prix. A handheld tuner is definitely the way to go, you adjust the tune to your liking. I feel all I need now is a CAI and a little louder exhaust and I'll be done with performance mods. Then all I have to do is some appearance mods and I'll be set.

Sweet deal!

I'd like to be able to offer VCM tuning for the G8 GTs but there's a lot of competition with these handheld devices and how flexible they are to use.

Sheboygan is way north of Milwaukee isn't it? I'm in Illinois, just across the border.

Glad to see you got it tuned Nick, have fun!

I know. I wish. I want to drive one. Especially one that's been massaged a bit.
