I'm sure the trans is more of a slushbox when factory stock, but Don's has some wickedly amazing shifts.

Joe if I'm ever up that way I'll let you know. I'm gonna try to get some G8 & GP owners to go the Great Lakes Dragstrip when it gets warmer out, that should be a lot of fun! It's south of Milwaukee if you don't mind taking a little cruise to get there. Mike I'm sure you would go, right?

I've got a 1989 Volvo 740 Wagon that is my DD. I blew the engine up in the Cutty a year ago. Just can't afford to make it run again. I have a good short block, but need all the gaskets and crap like that to get it going again.

I think this may apply to your engine also but, we learned on the LS4's that the dealer can see if you've been tuned even if you load the stock tune back (if the really want to). I posted this a while back in the tuning section take-a-look-at-this-from-gm-t4198s50.html

No need to worry about the dealer finding out the car was tuned with Superchips. A guy with a tuned G8 blew his motor (actually the Pontiac dealer did it) so he reloaded the stock tune before he took it in, and they didn't say anything about a tune so he got a new motor.

I just found out Superchips wants me to beta test the Volant CAI tune, and there will be other guys testing the other CAI tunes. When I receive it and give it a thorough testing, I'll let everyone know how I like it. There will be tunes available for the Vararam, NEP OTR & side mount, RotoFab and Spectre, so once they are all tested and approved you can download them.

The seller emailed me today and said the tuner was ready to be unlocked. So I plugged it in to my computer and ran the updating program. Now the tuner says it hasn't been used, so it looks like I'm good to go. WOOHOO!

After the tune:
OMG this tuner is amazing, it seems like a different car now. I took off in manual mode, hit 2nd gear and the car took off like rocket! It shifts like a fully manual trans without the clutch, all the shifts are firm & quick, with no lag at all like before. And at light throttle pressure it shifts nice & smooth just like stock.

I set the shift torque management at 50% above stock (It goes all the way up to 200%) and I couldn't imagine what it would be like any higher. I think the front wheels would come off the ground, lol. I also removed the AFM (cylinder deactivation) and the car feels so much better when cruising in auto mode. Sport shift holds the gears longer now, and selects the right gear when entering & exiting the corners to keep the motor in the powerband. It seems to have more power too, the rear wheels were struggling to get traction most of the time at anything over half throttle. I highly recommend the Superchips tuner, it turns the G8 into a wild animal!

Nice writeup, Don.

Looking forward to getting mine in a few days! ;-)

You will love it, the tune makes it seem like a different car. That was the best mod I have done to my car, and when I added a CAI it felt even better.

Interesting read....Thanks for the info guys! I am just looking into a tune after having the G8 almost 2 weeks. I had planned on taking it to a performance shop and have them tune it, but after reading this thread, I just may not.

I like the ability to reflash back to factory whenever its needed.

Are there different superchips tuners? What model are you guys using? Has anyone tried other tuners besides superchips?

I plan on installing a CAI intake soon too. I've been looking at the Rotofab.

Thanks again for all the info!!

Superships makes 2 tuners that work on the G8. All the guys in the G8 forum have the Cortex like me, and they also make the FlashPaq. They are both about the same price and have the same features, but the Cortex gives you a 2 year powertrain warranty. There aren't any other handheld tuners for the G8, but Vector Motorsports offers a PowerFlash tune and cable, plus you will need a laptop. It also has the ability to reflash your car back to stock.

The RotoFab is a good CAI and it's very popular. I like the Volant that I have, but you can't go wrong with either one.

It keeps the intake air temp down because it's enclosed, and it has a maintenance free dry filter so it won't contaminate the MAF with oil. Superchips is almost ready to release CAI specific tunes for the Volant and the RotoFab any day now. I'll be beta testing the Volant tune and let everyone know if I see any more power.

I bought the SuperChips Cortex tuner used from a member of one of the forums, and I must say that it was the best 250 I ever spent! From the factory, the g8 is lethargic at best, and the transmission programming (TCM module) is often confused as to which gear to pick at various times. The SC Cortex not only fixed all that, but made the shifts firmer and allowed me to disable the annoying vibrating DoD "4-cyl mode" as well. I'm very happy with the Cortex, and for those of you who live where you can get 93 octane (not western new york! We get 91 with 10% ethanol as our "super") gas, they're working with people to provide an even better tune for those with CAI's as well. More air on the intake means you can enrich the fuel tables and gain more performance... and the ability of the Cortex to be updated for free for live over the internet when they improve the tunes, that makes it a lasting investment!

Not to mention, the Cortex can also scan (and optionally reset) SES engine lights and error codes set by the computers... so it would replace one of the hand-held scanners that are for sale in some auto parts stores. Added value!

I am very impressed with my cortex.

I know it doesn't seem logical, but adding more fuel will make the engine lose power. Decreasing the fuel to air ratio will allow it to make more power if the ratio is too high. When you install a CAI the MAF senses more air, so it increases the fuel to keep the ratio at the amount that it's tuned for. To get more power the tune has to be leaner on fuel, which is what the CAI specific tune will do. But it can't be too lean either, that will cause knock which can damage the engine.

Ahhh... I learn something new every day! That's why I stick with the SC and am not tearing apart my engine to install a CAM like some other people are brave enough to do. I know some of the basics, but thanks Don for clearing that info up for me. Now that makes sense!

Next I would like to learn the basics (and applications) of vaccum (as in "taps from the break booster vaccum" quotes I've heard in the past) and other interesting concepts. :-)

Thanks guys for all of the info! I live pretty close to a few performance shops - Vector and Livernois. I am just wondering if there is any advantages from having a performance shop do the tune? I really like the ability to flash my own, to perform and then back to stock if needed. The cost of the Cortex...even new...is about the same as what the performance shops are charging. Are there tunes any better?
Thanks :) firstdue

I custom tune is best because it's done specifically for your car, and if you're thinking of going with headers or a cam then that's the way to go. If you just plan on a CAI and mufflers the Superchips tuner will work just fine.

Today I tested out the new Volant CAI tune for the Superchips Cortex and it rocks! Going WOT in 2nd gear using manual mode I could hear the tires screaming for traction with the TC on, and when I shifted to 3rd it just kept pulling harder than ever. The driveablity is great with no issues and the shifts are spot on in auto or sport mode. The outside temp was around 80 degrees so I'm sure it was pulling timing, so I'm going out in a little while since it's cooler to see what my 0-60 times are.

I need money too, I'm not working. You can have the Spectre intake for $55 shipped, that's less than I paid for it.
