Paul and me have been working on this package for almost a month now. I was up until 4:30 getting this done last night. I will have a write up with lots of details and a lot more/better pics sometime this weekend.

I also added a dashhawk to my set up to replace the atari gauges in the cubby.:)

What comes in the package:

And for an extra $25 a GPS mount the will work with the Garmin Nuvi 2xxW series of GPS units and maybe other but that will depend on the size of the GPS and the placement of power port of the GPS. I do recommend that a Nuvi 2xxW series GPS unit be used with this kit.

What are the dimensions of that GPS unit?
I have a Sony NAV-U And it looks to be the same shape and size as the one you have in that last picture.

And also...About what kind of price point are we lookin at here?

I think this is amazing...I just have a GPS mounted to the left side of my windshield and the power cord is just ran behind various trim pieces.....

Unit dimensions, WxHxD: 4.8"W x 2.9"H x .8"D (12.2 x 7.4 x 2.0 cm)

Display size, WxH: 3.81"W x 2.25"H (9.7 x 5.7 cm); 4.3" diag (10.9 cm)

True cost for everything (not including the GPS or Dashhawk) is $433 shipped + $25 shipped for mount.

My gps is 5.2 x 3.1 x .8.....So it may take some shoehorning.....

How much extra space is there for a slightly larger unit? any?

5.2 may work. You can always get a Nuvi 260w like I have from Amazon for less then $140.

I am going to try and put everything into this but I am sure that I will miss a couple of things.

Parts needed:

GPS:

I do recommend that a Nuvi 2xxW series GPS unit be used with this kit. I used a 260w and they can be had for less then $140.

The dimensions of the 2xxW are:

WxHxD: 4.8"W x 2.9"H x .8"D (12.2 x 7.4 x 2.0 cm)

Display size, WxH: 3.81"W x 2.25"H (9.7 x 5.7 cm); 4.3" diag (10.9 cm)

Any GPS with these dimensions should work.

Image

GPS mount:

Note this mount was made to work with the Nuvi 2xxW series of GPS. Other GPS units may work with these mounts but that will depend on the size of the GPS and the placement of power port of the GPS. I do recommend that a Nuvi 2xxW series GPS unit be used with this kit.

Omega top trim piece with air vents:

Image

Omega air duct:

Image

Cubby:

Front full sized cubby with no 12V outlet. Includes Rado Silver Fascia Plate for the new flip up door.

Image
Image

You can also get the smokers package with a little extra money.

Rado Silver A6 Gear Surround:

Image

Calais Stereo stack trim:
Image

Trim for Omega top trim piece with air vents:

Note this must be trimmed to fit.

Image

I do not have this but for a little extra money you can also add a rear trim kit and rear smokers package.

Step 1:

Pull the silver trim off from both the drivers side and passangers side. You may have to give it a good pull for it to come off.

Image

Step 2:

Using a plastic pry bar remove the gear shift surround. There are a total of 6 clips if I remember right. After you have popped all of the clips remove the two plugs connected to the TC/heated seat button and the two plugs connected to the window/lock control panel. Please the shift surround with the two control panels aside for later.

Image

Step 3:

Pull down the time the runs along the side of the radio stack and center console. On the passenger side there will be a plug under the radio (see pic). This plug is attached to the back side of the power supply that is in your cubby.

Image

Step 4:

Remove the two screws that hold the cubby in then give the cubby a pull. There are two clips behind the cubby holding it in place.

Image

Step 5:

Remove the radio face plate. This is done by grading the bottom corners of the face plate and pulling. See pic

Image

Step 6:

Now with the radio face plate gone you can remove the circled screws. *note the silver screws are torx screws* With the torx screws removed the inter plate will come off (see pic 2).

Image
Image

Step 7:

Below the radio there are two screws that need to be removed (see pic).

Image

Step 8:

On the drivers side pull down the time seen in the pic so that you can see the screw that needs to be removed.

Image

Step 8:

Open the glove box and remove the trunk release button trim

Image

Step 9:

Remove the 4 screws seen in pic 1 and then pull the glove box down so that you can see the screw shown in pic 2.

Image
Image

Step 10:

Remove the 6 screws seen in this pic. Also after the screws are removed remover the trim under the E brake and the cup on the other side.

Image

Step 11:

Using a plastic pry bar again remove the center speaker grill. Start from the end closet to the windshield. But the grill aside so the you can reinstall it on the new center stack later.

Image

Step 12:

Remove the two screws that are under the grill.

Image

Step 13:

Under the center console on both the driver and passenger side there is a screw and push pin that needs to be removed.

Image

Step 14:

The center stack trim is now free of any screws and can now be removed. First unhook the Atari gauge plug and then pull the trim off. There are some clips that you will have to pull out.

Step 15:

Tuck the Atari gauge wires behind the radio.

Step 16:

Remove the duct that was behind the center stack trip.

Image

Step 17:

Install the new duct that comes with the kit.

Image

Step 18:

Change over the control panels from the old gear shift trim to the new trim.

Image

Step 19:

Remove the power outlet from the cubby that was in your car. Next plug it back into the plug that it was orginal pluged into. Last take your power supply for you GPS and plug it into the power outlet and rout the cord up to were the GPS will be, tuck away and extra wire.

Image
Image

Step 20:

Install the GPS into the center stack using the supplied mounts.

Image
Image
Image

Step 21:

Reverse the order that you removed items and install all of the new ones but hold off installing the silver time back to the driver and passenger side.

Step 22:

Change over the air vent trip from your old vent to the new vents if you want to match the door vents. See pics

Image
Image

Step 23:

The trim that you will get for the new center stack does is too big. Take the part that you have and install it. Next take tape and following the lines of the stack low the tape down. See pic.

Image

Step 24:

Using another piece of tape follow the line of the first piece of tape and leave a gap the with of a hacksaw blade. Do this for both sides.

Image

Step 25:

Using a fine tooth hack saw blade cut the time following the line between the tape. Do this for both sides.

Step 26:

Using a file file down the cut, then using a find grit sanding block finish the cut area. Do this for both sides.

Image

Image

Step 27:

The ends of the trim my stick up. To fix this use double sided tape or glue. On mine only the passenger side needed tape.

Step 28:

Install the center stack trim and the stock silver trim.

Image

I will add some better pics of everything installed soon.

Wow all that work just to install an in-dash GPS? I just put mine on the windshield with a suction cup mount. It does look very nice though, and you did a great job with the writeup Charles! Since my Garmin C330 won't fit in the dash and I have the Atari gauges, I'm just gonna go with the digital Atari gauge mod that Chris White does.

Looks slick. Stupid question. How do you update the GPS?

You remove the whole dash to dig it out then update it. I thought about that earlier today. lol

After a couple of road trips with the GPS mounted in a number of places I got tired of it and this was the best way to go for me.

The new top part comes out by just removing 4 screw since it is not attached to the stack trim like the stock one. So only a 10 minute job to pull it out.

Why not make a splitter so that power and the USB cable can be connected, and then fit the car with a USB port to hook up to a laptop, and do updates that way? I don't have a G8, and probably never will, because I'm poor, but that is a lot of work to do an update.

You could do that, but I do not plan on updated my for a year or so since Garmins map updates are $90.

I updated my Garmin with a free 2009 download I acquired and it's still outdated. WTF??? I worked just fine before I updated it, so spending $90 on an update is a HUGE waste of money.

Yeah that is why I am going to hold off until the 2011 update comes out. I have 2009 now and there is no reason to spend $90 for 2010 when there will be little to no change to it.

Don't even bother Nick, the only thing they add are few stores here and there plus any new subdivisions. I have found that 99.9% of the places I'm looking for are on the original version. Heck the new Walmart by me opened in 2009 and that's not even on the 2009 version.

Amazing right up, any pics of how it originally looked up there, I think this is very cool and it's unique which makes it great, plus your sharing it with the community which is better.

This is what it used to look like, and you can see where my windshield mounted GPS sits.
