Mine just went out last week, not looking forward to doing this one, it's hard to find time to work my car these days...

Is there more than one spring in there, because I see one and it looks to be connected correctly.

Mine has been down for probably a year now. I hate taking dash panels off because in the past I always end up breaking something and nothing ever goes back together right.

It seems as if the failure rate on this spring is pretty high. I'd like to have it back up, but I just don't have the motivation to deal with it. Besides, the speedo works fine, lol.

Dwntwn.... only one spring as far as I remember.

Sprot Red... give it a shot... this sort of trim goes much easier
than the older style with the screws etc... I'm no mechanic, but
I got it done without breaking anything and the repair has lasted
years now. :)

Great write-up Unstable. I had this out and fixed / back together in about 2hrs with your step by step. I'm including pics of how I fixed the spring mount - it didn't require any drilling or epoxy, just put the spring underneath a tab on the original spring bracket. All I did was remove the main mirror (one screw), remove the motor assy. ( two screws) and took the spring mount loose enough to get the spring under the tab that sets in an alignment slot. Thanks again for the help on this. And by the way, this was on a 2005 and it had that "Special Screw" behind the dash cluster. What a PITA!!

This site ROCKS!

I followed the original writeup, however used the method mentioned above for securing the spring. The only problem I had was I knocked the smoke colored lens off of the sensor during reassembly, It fell down the defroster vent. It took me an hour and several ideas before I got out, it's amazing what you can do with duct tape, a shop vac, and small plastic tubing! I would recommend taking the sensor and LED off using by the quarter turn method as mentioned, but pop them off the wiring after the dash panel is removed, and place the led and Sensor in place and then attach the wires afterwoods.

I love not giving the dealership more money! Oh and mine is a late production 2005, and it had the screw behind the instrument cluster.

That's great, Clint. Always happy to help a fellow Grand Prix-er. We have to keep the heritage alive!

all fixed, thanks again guys, i thought the worst part was getting the light sensor back in (fat hands) so i took a screwdriver and unplugged it, inserted it in the dash, plugged it back in used a 1/4 inch drive 16 inch extention to help guide the sensor back into the hole because it kept popping out. just a thought.

Hi fellow GP drivers. I owned a 2005 Base GP, but upgraded to a 2004 GTP Comp-G. I have the HUD issue and plan to fix it over the Thanksgiving holiday but I have one question. My GTP has side curtain air bags and I wanted to know if there were any additional precautions that I should be aware of when removing the A panel or at any other time. The repair guide doesn't mention anything about this, so I have to be sure.

Thanks for any and all replies.

Followed the directions and fixed my HUD. Directions were spot on!

BTW, I had that stupid screw, too. '06 GXP. :(
