I saw a couple people asking for a write up for a FWI ( I posted this on a previous forum ), also if your not comfortable removing the bumper or cutting the bracket on the fender then this write up will work. I have to admit this setup has ran great and the roar is beautiful. I also included pictures of the install when I did it, takes around 30 minutes ( Couplers PITA ). NOTE: this is on a NA 3800 series 3 L26.

Material:

3 inch THIN WALLED PVC - you can get at lowes and such, them come in 3 inch my 10 foot so ask them to cut it

3 inch Coupler - You can get at Autozone or Advanced.

1 Roof Baffle - 3 inch port.

1 Spectra Filter (Part# 8162) - can be found at autozone

Weather Stripping Square Foam - Walmart

Now this intake was done on a L26 NA 3800 series 3 in a 2004 Pontiac Grand prix. This will work with super charged setups.

Note: Using a 4 inch tube will throw codes

Instructions:

1. Cut the PVC pipe 12 inchs long.

2. Now with the filter box removed postion the Roof baffle so you can see what needs to be cut. Using scissors is the best just cut slowly so you can get the shape and curve you need. If you mess up there $3 so dont worrie. Also as a idea add weather stripping around to help seal.

3. Now you will see there is a small gap with the fender and Spash Guard. Add the Square Weather Stripping (12 to 13 inchs ) in between the Fender and Splash Guard. Now take another piece (14 to 16 inchs) and bend in half and slide into the fender. This will stop and debris and water from coming from the wheel well.

4. Attach the filter to the PVC Pipe. This will be kinda a pain but just work at it with a small flathead and work the seal around the pipe.

5. Slide the PVC pipe through the roof baffle and insert the filter into the fender.
NOTE: The filter will fit you just have to go at a angle.

6. Attach the coupler to the MAF sensor it will be tight but again use a flathead and work around the seal, it will fit.

Completed.

Foam insert between the fender and splash guard.

Foam insert bent inhalf inside the fender.

Baffle Trimmed for intake.

Connects directly to the MAF.

As you can see the filter fit perfect and the air flow is great.

Does leaving the PCM just sitting out in the heat affect it? Thanks

Why and what codes will it throw if you have a 4 in system?

Y will it throw codes? I was hoping to run a 4 in pipe with a 4 in filter and have a 4 in to 3 in downsize would that throw a code? sorry im just trying to figure this out have been looking into this for a while and will do a 3 in but would rather have a 4 in.

Normally the size depends if you are N/A or S/C, If your N/A 3 or 4 will be fine but 3 is easier, I never noticed a difference using the 4 inch over the 3 in a N/A. Now if you have a S/C go 4 as you will benefit going larger.

I attempted the setup with and without and didn't see any difference on the scan. So in truth its not really restrictive at least from the results I got. But what you can do is use a Coupler or use a 45 degree elbow if you dont want to use the Coil Duct.

so what will be better performance wise? FWI or CAI. And what is different about the base model for the motor than the gt2

FWI is supposed to be better air flow and avoids engine heat. If the car is a Base Model or GT then it will have a L26 engine ( 3800 series 3 NON SC ).

so i was talking to one of my buddies who is a mechanic and he said not to do this because the oiled filter will mess up your MAF causing your tranny to go bad??? I have no clue if he is right or not and also i have an 04 so there is a computer in the bottom of my airbox what can I do with that so it doesn't bounce around? there is a picture of my airbox attached

No offense to your buddy but it will not affect the MAF or the transmission at all. As for the tray use the air box. Look at your air box and you will see how the bottom tray is attached. Use a dremel tool with a cutting disc and cut along the line on the tray and you will have a solid tray for the PCM that fits into the factory location. Now you are taking apart your air box for this but it does keep the PCM in a safe location.

Someone (the people who make the WizAired intake) make a PCM tray. Works basically the same as the WizAired intake does. My PCM sits on the bottom of the intake and haven't had any issues with it yet...

Tackled this today... I'm very pleased and surprised with the noticeable sound in my exhaust when I zoom. Any rough estimate on the horsepower increase and mpg decrease on an otherwise unmodfied 2004 N/A grand prix?

good write up, but I found that 3" is too restrictive for a GTP. I use 3.5" gives a noticeable difference over 3".

Very true with a supercharge setup 3.5 to 4 inch is ideal.

How do you protect the electronics under the airbox from water though? I dont want to cut up my airbox incase i ever have to mod back to stock for sale.

correct me if im wrong but once you seal off the fenderwell you wont really get that much water up into the engine bay around the pcm unless your hitting some massive puddles....just my .02

on another note...hows the air flow with that smaller filter??

they are sealing it to get cold air for the intake only. it blocks off the heat from the engine from the sucking air
