This write-up should cover MOST W-bodies.

Tools needed:

-11mm
-12mm
-13mm
-15mm
-14x2 tap
-14mm (1/2) drill bit

Parts needed::

-98-02 Firebird/Camaro calipers (18042491 & 18042492)
-98-02 Firebird/Camaro caliper brackets (18026163)
-98-02 Firebird/Camaro rotors
-98-02 Firebird/Camaro pads
-98-02 Firebird/Camaro banjo bolts (22163795)
-W-Body caliper bracket bolts

*I've supplied part numbers if you're planning on buying new*

Image

1. Obviously remove the tire/lug nuts (19mm or 3/4")

2. Once the tires out of the way you can remove the brake line (11mm). Also, try not to let it bleed too much,
no sense in getting it all over the pavement when you don't need to. Best thing to do is let the line sit up on the strut or spring.

3. Now you can remove the caliper bracket by removing the two bolts (15mm) attached to the spindle.
Might take some shimmying depending on how much fluid is still in the caliper.

4. Once the caliper/bracket is out of the way the rotor will slide right off the wheel hub.

5. Compare the two haha

Image

6. *This step and 7 can be skipped if you are planning on having a shop tap the bracket for you* (make sure they use a 14x2 tap ). Pull the F-body bracket aside so you can drill the larger holes (14mm).

[gives you an idea of the difference between a 12mm and a 14mm haha]
Image

7. Whip out your tap (14x2) to thread the new holes.. Make sure the bolts screw on and move on

8. Slide the F-body rotor onto the hub

9. Attach the F-body caliper bracket on the spindle using the W-body bolts

Image

10. Add the new hardware (if supplied) and slide on the pads

Image

11. Regrease the slider pins and hardware then slide on and bolt up the caliper to the bracket (12mm)

Image

12. USING THE F-BODY BANJO BOLTS, Attach the brake line to the caliper (13mm)
*W-bodies are a shorter bolt with finer threads. You'll destroy the threads on the caliper
if you use them, thus making it prone to leaks and essentially useless*

13. Attach wheel and repeat steps on other side.

Image

14. Once both sides are done, bleed your brakes and admire your work :)

how much does this cost if you buy every thing new?

and is this the same for 04+?

and is it a noticeable difference in stopping power?

thanks!

You can get 06+ Impala brakes as well. Cheaper and easier to find and they will bolt right up and since they don't require drilling out.

this is cool. so i can just get all the stuff for an Impala and it will give me better breaking and stuff, and will bolt right up?

i ask because i will be needing new breaks in the next few months and want to upgrade sense i have to get new ones anyway.

thanks!

-- Mon Aug 15, 2011 5:59 pm --

i should ask what is better and or easier? GXP or F-body breaks ? i read the GXP does not work with 16 inch rims so i guess i cant do that. but i dont know how to tap and drill the metel brakets. is there any upgrade for the grand prix that is direct bolt up?

GXP's and 06+ Impala brakes are a direct bolt on. No drilling or tapping required. I feel like I'm repeating myself. Only the F-bodies need you to drill and tap the brackets. The Impala brakes are dual piston F-body designs, but are made of cast iron instead of aluminum, and have the correct carrier holes for Wbody spindles (since the Impala is a Wbody). Fbodies and Impala calipers work with 16" wheels, GXP's do not.

well i heard that the stock ones are not as good as the stainless steel. and if i were to go ahead and do this upgrade, i would want to go ahead and get the better break lines.

so i am doing some shopping for this upgrade and i wanted some clarification.
first off it is actually a rather expensive upgrade at $500.
but maybe i have the wrong stuff.

these are all parts for a 2006 Chevy Impala SS

i am on auto zones website and made a cart and here is whats in it.

1.Duralast Reman/Brake Caliper - Front drivers side
Part Number: C858

2. Duralast Reman/Brake Caliper - Front passenger side
Part Number: C859

3. Cardone Reman/Brake Caliper Bracket - Front X 2
Part Number: 14-1117

4. Motormite/Banjo Bolt-2 of them
Part Number: 13940
i dont know if this is the right thing or not, its just the first banjo bolt listed.but you guys can tell me.

5. Duralast/Brake Rotor - Front X 2
Part Number: 55126
Alternate Part Number: 41124

6. Duralast Gold Cmax/Brake Pads - Front X 2
Part Number: DGC1159

so after all that, did i get it all right?
is that everything for the upgrade? or is it all wrong?

thanks all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you go to RockAuto.com you can get Loaded calipers (so brackets, pads, slide bolts, metal clip things, etc) and both rotors for like 300 bucks. Getting used calipers from a boneyard would be much cheaper (usually around 50 bucksish for the pair, but sometimes more towards 100, which would still be 100 less than a reman)

These are the part numbers for loaded ACDelco Reman's.
ACDELCO Part # 18R2445
ACDELCO Part # 18R2444
