Good day!

I know many of you have an outstanding clean engine and bay and I am interested in knowing what you have used. I used engine degreaser awhile back and that cleaned it up a bit, but really did not touch all the dirt.

Any advice? Any magic? :)

Clean it with steam or if you can't do it that way, a little simple green and a high pressure washer goes a long way...

At my work we spray down every nook and cranny with this stuff called "Special cleaner" made by Auto Magic, followed by pressure washing it. When we're done, dry up any large amounts of water and apply a coat of "Magic Dressing" made by the same company.. Works very well, though the grand prix don't have much under the hood for the eyes that the dressing would touch up, compared to a lexus..

I may try this out and see what results I get...along with the elbow grease.
Thanks!

Just be careful spraying down the engine bay. I tried doing it about a month ago, and just using a low-pressure hose to rinse the crud off, managed to somehow kill an injector, which meant tearing the top end apart replacing it...and making my engine bay all dirty again >.<

You should never use a high pressure washer on the motor. Spray some simple green on, brush any heavily soiled areas, then rinse with a low pressure hose using as only as much water that is necessary. It's a good idea to cover the electrical devices with aluminum foil or plastic bags to keep them from getting wet.

When saying to use a pressure washer, we're not recommending holding the wand 2 inches from the engine bay.. using any of the products mentioned above with running hose or washer will work fine.

Plenty of dealerships and detail shops spray down the bay.. just use common sense when spraying, and let it dry as long as you can before driving.

It takes less than a half hour to do it, even less if you do it often. With simple green you don't have to scrub light dirt, just spray it on and let it loosen the dirt for 15 minutes, then rinse it off.

They're done with every package we offer at my work, with the exception of the basic wash... Takes less than 5 minutes for every bay I've done (using special cleaner). No scrub or soak required.

What other product do you use, Don? Or do you only use simple green?

I just use simple green. A lot of that dressing to make it shine seems to attract more dirt faster.

Thanks for the info!

I am assuming that if I am NOT using engine degreaser, but just Simple Green, the engine can be warm while I apply the Simple Green and let it soak.

Correct?

Sure it can be warm but not hot. I would say around 100 degrees is fine, anything over that is too hot.

This probably isn't the best method, but its quick, and easy...
I use my local spray and wash to do the exterior every now and then, and while I'm there I'll pop the hood and stand a few feet away and spray. I haven't had any problems using this method to clean it so far. If I wanna get really fancy I'll use some tire shine or inteior detailer on the plastic.

The bad thing about that is your motor is hot since you just drove the car there. Spraying cold water on a hot motor isn't good.
