My friend bought me a volt meter as a gift. It's nothing fancy, three wire hookup (keyed power, lights, ground...I tied it into the radio harness.) When I hooked it up it holds steady on battery voltage, but when the car is running the voltage goes crazy, constantly pulsing in like a .5V cycle, very quickly. Is this the gauge, or could it be the Vreg on my alt? I think I'm still running the OEM alt FWIW...

I would try tapping into the ignition switch, and see how the gauge reacts. Just make sure the gauge doesn't read 12 volts with the key off, or you'll kill the battery.
