The cover just pops off with a little prying, just take it easy and you will have no problems. As for the number of speakers it is 9, 2 6x9 "subwoofers" , 2 3.5" speakers within the 6x9's, 2 6.5" woofers in the front doors along with 2 tweeters in each door and the center channel in the front dash.

Is that the same setup for an 06 grand prix gt?

The rear deck contains 4 (the 6x9's and 3.5"'s ) even though there are only 2 plastic covers.

Im pretty sure that the 6x9's are actully have split signals coming from the amplifire. the amp sends out low and high tones to the two different cones on the 6x9's (they are coaxial instead of component) and thats where you get the other two "speakers" from. So it is the center channel in the dash, the 6.5 compnents in the front doors, the 1'' tweeters in the front doors and the 6x9's in the back so its really 7 all together

NO it is 9 now pay attention there are 2 6x9 subwoofers in the rear deck and technically the signal is split between them from the amp, and located within these 2 6x9 subwoofers is a full range speaker that is approx 3.5" round and they both get a separate signal from the amplifier. then the 2 6.5" mid bass woofers located in each front door along with a tweeter in each door with the crossover located within the amplifier itself and located in the front dash is a full range "center channel" speaker giving us a total of 9, yes count them, 9 speakers and a grand total of a whooping 270 watts of power, how this divided up is still a mystery. Therefore the 6x9 are NOT coaxial speakers but actually a small speaker within the larger. If you have ever removed them you could plainly see this.
