So, I picked up the 2002 GTP I currently drive about a month ago. I has (from what I know) to be the very base head unit.. CD, no tape, and 2 sliders, 1 for treble and 1 for bass.

What boggles me is that it has the Bose speakers, and an amp (I'm assuming) in the trunk.. did the previous owner swap out the head, have his own system, or do they come with this jank head to begin with?

That's what it comes with. I don't have CD in the head unit, just tape, but mine has a CD changer in the trunk. Then the 2 sliders (I miss my graphic equalizer from my '01 GT)

Ah I see, I had an 06 base GP that I traded in for this GTP. Really like the new GP's but driving it for work really put a toll on it's performance. Just miss how easy it was to tweak the sound on the 06 base stereo over the 2 sliders that came with this one.

Would it be worth just starting a new system from scratch or working with what is already in the car?

I personally like the quality of the speakers, but the BOSE system tones down the base as you turn up the volume...kinda bugs me. I'm still stock so you'll have to consult someone who's done stuff with theirs.

Yeah, I agree on the quality. Pretty good considering the age IMO. I wouldn't mind a new unit, and adding a sub or two down the road.

I've been playing with the same idea. I'd probably go with a Pioneer shallow sub. Save weight and space. The only drawback to replacing the head unit is that I lose control of the steering wheel controls without an adapter...

Can't be too terribly hard to find an adapter would it? I've grown fond of the steering wheel controls also.. Maybe when I get back later I'll dig around on Google. :)

there is an adapter for new headunits to retain steering wheel function, alpine can be hardwired directly to the car

No, it isn't too hard, search PAC-SWI or something like that

Clubgp store sells one, so take the name from there, search for it and you can find the company's web site.

the stock 7-band delco hu can be swapped out for the 2band that comes with the bose

personally i chose to go with a new hu altogether but ive heard that doing this really brings out the best in the bose, for as little effort as it requires

my gt has bose, and i put a pioneer hu in so i could run my sub. i chose not to keep my steering wheel controls, because i never used them enough to miss them... but if you have any questions i can try and help you out

You heard swapping in the 7band HU works best, or changing the HU entirely? I'd like to add a sub in the future

well i know that putting in a new hu entirely really helps the sound and is the way to go if you want to add subs in the future.

however

putting in the 7band is a cheaper, easier way to get similar results, especially if you dont plan on doing much more to the stock system. personally i have never heard a car that this has been done to, but many people have done it and claim that their stock bose system sounds much better

you mentioned that the bose turns down the bass as you turn up the volume. if you get a new aftermarket hu that issue should be eliminated. if you get the 7band i'm not sure if that would be fixed. jfyi.

Would I just be able to replace the deck to start? What all would need to be changed.. going to add a sub in the future, but as of now a new deck without changing the bose speakers etc would be awesome.

Any input?

Sorry to dig up an old thread ....but I'm looking to replace a HU in an 01 GT that just has the bass/treble sliders to the 7band equalizer. Can it be done easily? I loved this HU in my old 00 GT....and really wanna stay with a stock stereo as i've had nothing but theft problems when installing aftermarket. This unit was tuneable enough to have pretty decent bass IMO...for a stock stereo. Thanks in advance for any advice!! :)

I replaced my treble and base slider headunit with the 7band eq that I bought on ebay that was modded with an aux input jack. The aux jack works with the fm radio part. The fm radio will still work when nothing is plugged into the jack. But putting in the 7band eq made a big improvement with the sound.
