I think I remember reading somewhere that the carbon fiber inferno hood isnt actually carbon fiber, Is this correct?

yup thats correct.. it's just really good looking vinyl over the regular fiber glass hood covered with a laminate.

I assume the ram air vents work? i mean other wise just doing a good job with some stick ons would look just as good and be just as functional

the vents arent really ram air. they are more heat extractors then anything, they dont even have a cut out on the underside of the hood that i remember.

On my hood there is a circle above the filter area where the air vents to over the airbox. The heat extractors seem to work. After driving if I place my hand around heat extractors there is heat (now if this actually helps anything that is beyond me).

Some guy on club gp(won't mention names) tried to convince me the inferno hood was real carbon fiber but if it is just a laminate that is just funny. Overall I'm fine with the fiberglass version, it is lightweight as well. I noticed on PFYC.com they only say weight savings of 10 pounds for fiberglass! Makes ya wonder why they didn't put carbon fiber? Oh wait cause it is not. lol.

My next question is what would you guys think if someone cut the inferno hood right up the middle and made a split hood set up?

As far as I know, the CF inferno is actually CF.

If its anything like the SD hoods (which it probably is since their both PFYC exclusive), its real carbon fiber but not entirely made out of carbon fiber, only the top layer of the hood is carbon fiber, the rest is fiberglass. A local GP owner has the SD hood and that is how its constructed.

If you look through it on that link you can see that its split where the hood normally wraps over the top. If it were full CF it would cost about 3 times what it does...

Ummm...my hood is DEFINITELY carbon fiber...you can ask the previous owner (qball) too. He had to cut the frame of the hood on the bottom for his full stack i/c to fit in. There's a hole the size of a 50 cent piece...you can feel the real carbon fiber texture and weaving inside the hole.

I sent an e-mail to PFYC for clarification with a link to this thread. I will let you know what I find out if they don't reply here.

ABout the ram air part of the hood. It is technically ram air if you have a short ram cold air. Since the air will me going directly into the hood vents and to the cone filter..i guess u could says it side ram air lol

The Inferno Hood is a two piece construction that consists of a top skin and a bottom skin (underside) that are bonded together just like the factory hood. The top skin is real carbon fiber (no, not a laminate at all but the same carbon fiber you'd find in, say a Boeing 787), the bottom skin is fiberglass. All vents are functional. The inlet vents route over to the hole above the air box and does provide cold air to the intake area.

Is it ram air? Ummm, no. By the time the air makes all the twists and turns, gets through your air filter, up your intake tube and into your throttle body, there is no pressure to speak of and if you have a supercharger, well, there's your ram air. It provides more "forced" induction than any ram air system ever did (unless the space shuttle had ram air). However it is a source of cool air into your intake so there is some benefit to making it functional.

For heat extraction, there are two vents at the back of the underside of the hood that allow hot air to escape the engine bay. This air flows into the space between the two skins and exits through the 8 vents on the top side. The reason is it done this way is so water does not flow freely into the engine bay from the topside vents. Any water that enters through the heat extractors at the top flows between the two skins to the lowest point of the hood (at the front of the car) and will drain through tiny drain holes then flow down behind the bumper. If your shop has not drilled these holes for drainage then the hood will hold water. These are not drilled at the factory because many people do not want them drilled because they do not drive their car in the rain.
