Well i have seen alot of peps posting about putting blue leds in the cluster and in front of them. Even in the one post a person had a cluster that had the back blue lighting from ebay, but i cant find them on ebay. So i took it upon myself to start tinkering with it and posting my progress.

It all started with a free cluster from the junkyard. I put some blue leds from behind and it lit up the needle but not the numbers. So i started investigating what it would take to make it work. I made the decision to start tearing apart the cluster to make it do what i want it to do. I knew that there was a kind of paint on the back of the cluster to make it the red color that shows thru. So i knew i had to get rid of that. I found that carb cleaner/brake parts cleaner works great for this.

I started to split the backing of the cluster and the front panel from each other. It was tough at first but it started to get easier. I did this after i took off the needles. It was pretty easy. I will be able to put it back together with some sort of glue.

So on with the pics. I hope you enjoy and ill add more as i finish. Should be done by this weekend.

Day2

In these pics of the cluster lit up, there is only 3 leds back lighting this. They are not even wideangle ones. So when its done, there should be all 4 in there with reg leds converted to a wideangle lens. Light output should be more uniform and should have lil to no bright spots.

Paint stripped off

Paint still on back

You can see the difference

You can see how just white shows thru now. Stil dont know if i want to clear out all the trouble lights and such.

Oh blue

if your going to buy leds, make sure they are wideangle. if not you will have brighter spots like mine above. i have the solution for mine done, just not in the pic.

Hmmm...Wide angles, never heard of such. Sounds like a good idea though.

So they will fit?

if you buy just leds, you have to make them fit in the socket with solder and say hot glue. But you can buy 194 led sockets already made.

just a heads up for you. The hud switch, light switch, and foglight switch already have leds in them. they put a silicone cover over the white led. you can take that off and have them white. But i would advise putting a brighter one in though.

window switches just need the led's and resistors (headlight switch, and HUD switch too)

ive heard that if you file the tops a little off the leds, that will take car of the brighter spots wbile not affecting the diode itself.

that is what i am doing. but it still isnt enough. you need to add more, lol. i gotta finish the other ones that have 3 leds instead of 1. good thing about that is, no more resistors with 3 in a series.:)
