So the story begins in July, when my friend Colin retrofitted his headlights using Morimoto Mini H1's.

Image

Image

I, of course, got an itch to improve light output and overall front end appearance. I grew tired of my flickering HID's. I saved some money together and made a purchase.

1. Morimoto Mini H1 4.1's (low & high beam 6000k)
Image

2. 04+ headlight housing's
3. 04+ fog/turn housing's
4. Blazer projector's (fog light 3000k)

Image

I participated in my first headlight bake off on October 7th. We work on these every couple week nights for a few hours together, and Colin has put a majority of effort into getting these done when I'm not around as well.

In fact, last night while I was at a haunted house he sent me a picture that really "haunted me". The first look at the pre-final product...

Image

Aimed and adjusted, ready to reseal.

Image

One headlight down, one more and two fog lights to go.

I just put matchboxes in my headlights. I need to make good clear lenses though, I was in a hurry and my stock lenses are trashed so I just cut a hole in them and glued some plexi in. Looks like garbage but has awesome output.

I have some V3.0 mini's as well, and when I can make some clear lenses I plan to go quad. I may even get another pair of matchboxes in my fogs (have ES300s there now) we will see.

Let us know how the fog retro goes. I still haven't decided how I'm going to go about doing mine.

Should the shroud's be painted gloss black, or should they be left silver? I honestly, like them the way they are and think it may be too much black. I'm welcome to anybody's opinions.

I tried all black on my first retro. I ended up hating it and on my second retro, I left the shroud chrome and the stock high beam chrome and I very much prefer it this way. I say leave it chrome. Or paint it silver. Not black.

This is what mine looked like initially:
Image

This was after I redid everything in black, and cleared out the side marker, which I ended up hating:

I don't have a pic of the way they look now, but I'm much more pleased without them being all black.

Looks great, I wish I had the patience/time to do this as well. I am almost tempted to start PM'ing people to make me a set.
Too much dust from house renovations to even consider this... How much are you guys spending on parts to achieve these builds? In my head I am thinking $800~ or something, but who knows, you tell me!

I think i spend about 200 on parts since I already had the HID's ballasts and housings, but ballasts and bulbs are like 70 bucks.

Morimoto mini H1's: $120
DDM 55W ballasts and bulbs and relay: ~$70
Silicone: ~$30
Assorted bolts and brackets from Home Hardware: ~$15
Switches, LED's, and extra wiring: $15

Hey you don't need an oven, a heat gun works just as good if you do it properly. Just work your way around a few times without getting too close and melting it, and it will pop right off.
