So, I've been looking around online and have seen some stock hoods for $100 bucks. Sounds reasonable, right? My question is, does anybody have any experience with fiberglass? I love the look of the Inferno hood scoops but the back just kills it for me with those vents. I want something with scoops but to remain subtle. I've thought of going either of these two ways if it isn't too difficult.

A. Take an Inferno hood, eliminate the rear facing vents by fiberglassing it smooth.
B. Picking up a stock hood since they're much more affordable and modifying it into a low-rise cowl hood.

Again, these are just ideas geared toward the look I'm going for in a hood. I don't know what kind of work is involved, how expensive the parts and supplies may be, or if it's even feasible. But if anyone has something to say, I'm all ears!

Ive always liked the idea of a better hood too, anything that is like the newer GTO or G8 style, subtle yet aggressive. I would love to see if anyone has anything better.

I think what I plan on doing is reading up a bit on fiberglass, bondo and possibly raw carbon fiber. If the funds look good and the difficulty isn't said to be too hard with fabrication I will take on a one of a kind GP cowl hood myself in the next two weeks as I took off from work just to dedicate time to my car lol. I'll do my best to document and photograph the entire process for the forum if fabrication is a go.

You'll probably be the first to see it in person if I make one.

Keep us updated on how it goes. I've been waiting to run across a cheap hood to do a large cowl to for some time now.

If you can, post progress pics and measurements along the way as well!

Here is a thought. I know its not for everybody, but I have not seen it on an 04+ yet. Just a thought. I thought it matched the stock hood lines pretty good.

Hmm, there's just something about the T/A scoops that don't look too good on other bodies. I like the slotted intake vents as per the G8 since it keeps the profile of the hood low and smooth. Now, if I took the stock hood and tried to follow the main lines on each side of the middle crest line, it would retain the factory lines but then just raise it more by the windshield for a low cowl. The problem is, when picturing this in my head, it seems as though the raised section of hood would be too wide by the windshield. So it seems, in an attempt to retain factory lines to keep odd shapes/lines out of the equation, I in turn create another set of lines out of whack... =/

I think the WS6 style hood looks best on the 97-03's but if you try that it may work! I hope you end up liking it if you go with it, either way it is something different!

As far as fabrication, if I cut a section of hood out and raise it, say an inch, would I be able to fill in the gap with fiberglass? Or because it's steel, I would have to weld in more steel? Because I might just make a template out of a new hood and try making a full fiberglass from it so that it's one solid piece. If it works out, I might try my hands at some raw carbon fiber. But really, I'm wondering why it doesn't seem like many people have tried making something completely unique. I really don't want this to be a huge waste of time, so I'm hoping it isn't a sign that the work/difficulty and funds involved may not be worth it.

If you have never tried anything like this before, I don't recommend you jump in head first. Even basic body work takes time to get right; blocking, sanding, body filler, metal work, those things take time. If you don't have any experience in metal fabrication a project like this can get out of hand really fast.

That being said, I don't want to sound discouraging. A project like this is just not something that can be handled in the average garage.

@ blackspike

No, that's exactly the type of feedback I was hoping to get out of this. For someone to help point me in the right direction. Because I haven't done bodywork like this in the past, therefore I wouldn't know if it is something that is possible to pick up rather quickly or takes lots of practice before it even starts to come out right. It still sounds like something fun to try and practice with whether or not it comes out nice but perhaps I shouldn't just waste the money when I could finish up the performance aspect of my car and THEN worry about a unique look. In the meantime, I will take my idea to a couple people who really know their bodyfab stuff and see if they might be able to produce something special. Just feels infinitely more rewarding when it's done yourself though.

Don't get discouraged, I would just do a lot of research. Make sure you measure 10 times and cut once. I've gone over my design concept in my head so many times. Even with minimal auto body knowledge, I think I can pull something decent off.

I am personally holding off until I can get into autobody school to do mine, that way I can use tools and supplies free/cheap and have some instruction while I do it. If you have an autobody school nearby and don't want to attend classes, you can usually "donate" projects for them to do, and usually just get away with just paying a small amount for labor and materials.

@ Explicit_Spade

I like that idea, I will have to look around locally and see what my options are.

@ z3r0

That will help too, thanks man. I'll be sure to check that out.

For the cowl hood, here is my first concept drawing. I should have a ram-air/G8 style hood design by the end of tonight.

This is awesome.

My only advice: take your time! Don't take shortcuts. It may get discouraging and start looking the same day after day, but it's better than rushing and ending up with problems.

I started drawing out an air scoop hood last night but by the time I made it to the actual hood in my drawing I just ended up drawing a stock GP lowered on 19''s. I think I'm set on a cowl hood. I'm going to work with Navyguy on this one so hopefully something great will come out of this.

@white4d96 and Kendra

Glad you both really seem to like the idea.

Yeah Kendras got a real sick hood on her sedan, I would love something like that, I always just wanted a straight carbon fiber hood, no cowl or scoops or anything, just a stock hood only CF. Why has no one made me one!?!?!?!?!? :)

@ NavyGuy and Shipman

It's funny you mention Kendra's hood because when I thought about designing a scoop hood I was going to model it from the SD hood for the last gen. I don't know who decided to add those damn fins to the Inferno hood for our late model GPs. But since there seems to be quite an interest in hood options, I will sketch out an airscoop design as well as a slit design (G8 GT). I should have those done by tomorrow night, if not sooner.
