It's the gas mixture within the glass bulb.

Marketing so people that don't know the difference fall for it or as Alex said, people that don't want to mess with HID's can at least get the look of them without the price and complex install (even though it's not hard at all.) HID's aren't even bulbs at all, they are arc tubes. Regular bulbs have some sort of filament with a gas inside.

Hey for some people, replacing a regular bulb or changing the oil is a "hard install"

Exactly, and they definitely are less reliable, they blow out way more often, get the HIDs and be done with it

Good point. Any bulb that had a blue coating will produce less light output. If you stick with halogens, then stick with one that has a clear lens such as the GE nighthawks or even the philips x-treme bulbs.

If you can ever find them, Osram Silverstars. Not the Sylvania ones, those are crap. The Osram ones are insane but IIRC they are not DOT legal and are not sold here.

I had HIDs when I had the spyder projectors. Since then I have gone back to halogens and stock lights. Using philips x-treme for the headlights and osram H3's for my aftermarket fogs. It's a very good combo for sticking with halogens.

Meh. I'm running the 100w fake HID's in my highs. No issues here with either housings or wiring. YMMV
