Which LEDs fit?

I'm on my second set that I have to return. 20% restocking fee for a sealed anti-static bag nonetheless (ridiculous).

First set (17mm x 28mm):

Second set received today (~27mm measured):

The funny thing is, I called the seller of the second set before I placed the order. I even showed him the first set and gave him dimensions. Also, while these are meant to fire in a single direction (which is why I wanted them), they never truly fire downwards when installed after the twist and lock. They tend to be ~90° off.

I'm hoping these will fit as the stock 194 bulbs are a good 23mm-24mm in length:

Now for the reverse lights, these barely fit but I ran into an issue. With the car off, the center LED in each one would stay on and then proceed to flash. One worked fine when it was installed with my stock halogen. It's just the moment the two were installed that it started "acting up." I think it may have to do with a missing load of some sort.

EDIT: Added some more info.

I used the 5 LED Matrix style in mine. They're about the same size as a normal bulb (shorter but maybe a little wider), and since they fire in all directions they work in any orientation.

Thanks.

If these new ones don't fit or aren't bright enough, I'll look into those.

Holy shit. I tried explaining this issue once to Paul from diodedynamics, he didn't understand :(

This is funny as hell because I had this exact same problem. Now I just use super bright 5 led ones from eBay and those are even to long so they don't twist into place. Electrical tape to the rescue.

I bought some cheap 4 LED 194 bulbs through a work supplier (RoadMaster is the product brand). Fits right, but since it's forward firing light, it's not extremely bright on the plate. I like the way it looks though.. It's like ambient white light making the blue lettering on my plate pop.

And that's exactly why I went with the first two "bulbs."

Since there are no reflectors in the license plate housing, I figured down firing LEDs would be spot on.

I ran in to two caveats: 1) Neither fit, and 2) if they did, once locked into place, they wouldn't be firing downwards, lol.

Yeah, I don't know if there's an option to buy lights that are on a 90 degree base... Either way, if they were firing down, I think they'd be ridiculously bright, making your bumper glow.

The LEDs I tried out didn't seem all that bright. Meh, I'll see when these new ones get here.

Thanks.

Try SMD style LED's. They're generally a lot brighter than leds with the plastic bulb shape.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T10-194- ... ccessories

I has these suckers all throughout my old GTP, they were bright little things. My license plate light was a single SMD led and it was much brighter than the 5 led non SMD style I tried.

I put the 5 smd one in my GF's 97 and they a perfect looking, however, I did have to trim down the base of the light a little to get it to fit into the housing since it was a slightly too tall.

The 5 LED matrix ones that Warhellride posted would probably be the best bet for just straight plug and play but would be dimmer than the smd lights.

Did you read the thread?

The ones you linked to are 28mm in length.

I wasn't suggesting you put hose in your license plate socket, I said try to find SMD style bulbs and posted a link to what I was talking about. SMD style bulbs come in all shapes and sizes, and as I said before, the one I had in my license plate socket was a single SMD and it was brighter than the 5 LED bulb I tried before that. I didn't give you a direct link to exactly what you were looking for, I'm guessing that's where your confusion came from? The single SMD bulb was flat on top, probably no more than 18mm. Sorry for trying to help

4 SMD, 18mm tall.

Wait what?

You have a Bonneville. Please read man.

This discussion is about size (length) and firing direction.

So please kindly explain how those 3x2 down firing LEDs will fit in a Grand Prix when a 2x2 and 1x2 did not fit and have light output orientation issues?

4 SMD, 18mm tall.

I already tried two SMD types which were down firing.

There is no reflector in that housing, so I am trying to avoid getting an LED that provides less output than the stock halogen. So having a single SMD LED firing forward with no reflection seems kind of pointless.

The length would be great though.

Had a single SMD in mine and it was plenty bright with no reflector housing, the 4smd would have been overkill. You asked waht fits, well none of us know the exact mm dimensions of our license plate bulbs, we just know what we've used in the past and what has worked and we posted some suggestions. Good luck finding the perfect bulb.

This is what I use for my license plate lights. They fit fine. They work fine.

Scroll down almost halfway to the 5 star SMT.

Thanks.

How do they compare to the stock halogen bulbs (light output)?

Like I said before, I'll wait until those other bulbs get in and see how they turn out (light output wise as I know they'll fit).

your first set of 2x2 measures 28x17, mine they measure at 24.5x10 (including the base)
so they are smaller
and when a 28mm set didnt work? why the kcuf would you buy a 27? wasnt it clear enough that you needed more than one mm
